As of last night, now three college football teams have scored 55+ points and won by 30+ points in seven games in one season:

2025 Indiana
1886 Yale
1885 Princeton

Happy days are here again.

If Indiana defeats Miami on Monday night, whether by 30+ points or one point, that will complete the most incredible turnaround story in the history of sport.

That's just my opinion, of course. But what are the other plausible nominees?

I used to think that Bill Snyder at Kansas State was the greatest turnaround in the history of college football.

Arriving at Indiana in 2024 was just as tough an assignment and Cignetti has turned it around faster and more thoroughly. It's easier to climb the ranks today because of NIL and the transfer portal, so it's not a fair comparison to Snyder at K-State. But Snyder's achievement was turning *ONE OF* the losingest programs ever into a national CONTENDER.

If Cignetti wins on Monday, he will have turned *THE* losingest program ever into THE national champion -- in two years.

With a Hoosier win, this will be the all-time mark. There will be no other candidates for as long as most of on this board will be alive. That's how far ahead the Indiana turnaround will be, if things go right on Monday.

Even if they lose on Monday, this will still be the greatest turnaround to this point, but there might be room left at the top for somebody else to slip in some day.

What's the greatest turnaround story in the history of the Ivy League? I would nominate Bill Tierney and Princeton men's lacrosse.

One commonality between Tierney and Cignetti is that, upon taking over a moribund program, both coaches expected and planned to win the national championship -- and quickly.

I don't know how you develop that kind of confidence, but it must be nice.

Technically, this team is the "University of Indiana - Jaames Madison University edition."

Linebacker: Aiden Fisher, Jailin Walker
Defensive Line: Mikail Kamara, Tyrique Tucker, James Carpenter
Wide Receiver: Elijah Sarratt
Cornerback: D'Angelo Ponds
Running Back: Kaelon Black, Ty Son Lawton
Tight End: Zach Horton
Offensive Line: Nick Kidwell, Tyler Stephens

Although Mendoza probably has something to do with it.

Well, technically, that's last year's team (and yeah there were a lot of JMU guys that followed Cignetti who were of no interest to any other Power 4 schools whatsoever).

Only Fisher, Kamara, Tucker, Sarratt, Ponds and Black are on the current team. (and Mendoza of course).

On this year's coaching carousel, significant numbers of players are following their former coaches from old school to new schools (Iowa St to Penn St (22), and Penn St to Va Tech (9+)). The new normal I suppose.

Point taken, but the remaining JMU guys sure had an impact last night.

And as pointed out by AO in another post, average age of these players may have something to do with it.

Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy on the relative ages in the upcoming NCAA champ football game:
"Fact is, both squads are loaded with fifth- and sixth-year seniors, and the average age of their players is between 22-23. Indiana’s Heisman-winning quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, turns 23 this year. That’s the same age as Patriots starter Drake Maye. Overall, the Hoosiers are almost as old as the 2025 Green Bay Packers, who were the NFL’s youngest team this season, averaging 25 years per man. Indiana’s coach, Curt Cignetti, has figured out what Rick Pitino figured out when the transfer portal came to NCAA basketball: Get old guys. It’ll be boys vs. men. Put 23-year-old men on the field against 18-year-old true freshmen and you’ll win just about every game. At St. John’s, Pitino’s got what amounts to an NBA G-League team playing against college freshmen. Monday’s Indiana-Miami “college” championship is really just a minor league football game."
