Subject: The Early Birds — Nautical but Nice

Three Ivy championships on the line today in rowing.

Women start off with their finals in Pennsauken. To nobody’s surprise, Lori Dauphiny’s Princeton juggernaut takes the gold and the first eight, but Penn accelerates its best boat in a long while, the first eight only 2.5 seconds behind the Tigers, upsetting Yale for second. Bruno takes 2V eight, Tigers V4.

For those who aren’t big 8 AM spectator freaks, Princeton, Yale and Brown have deep squads that are nationally competitive, the other Ivies at this stage don’t. Makes the Penn 1V row even more impressive, and hopefully they’ll have a shot at the NCAAs.

More later on the men’s Eastern Sprints.

Joisey - Tip of the hat for “Nautical but Nice”!

For Tiger crew fans, the #1 men heavies are looking for their first Sprints win since 2006 and both the 1V and 2V boats are undefeated. Harvard has had a great season and will likely challenge Princeton for the title. Brown is highly rated and, after years of dominance, Yale has fallen back to the pack this season but they are always a threat.

Penn and Harvard are the favorites of the LW V8 race.

Somehow amidst all the spring hoopla I never noticed that the final Princeton women’s heavy 1V8 had no seniors in it. Probably a scary thought for the rest of the country.

I believe womens' crew teams are referred to as "Open", rather than "heavy" (and as opposed to the other class of "lightweight".

At least, if you know what's good for you.

Correcto, spardude. I’ll be happy to call them summa cum ravishing or Pulitzer candidates if they promise not to hurt me.

Huge amount of great rowing at all levels — a number of schools getting noticeably deeper.

H wins the lights by an impressive 2.5 secs over Penn and Princeton

Bruno with a great win in the heavies — by 8/100 sec over the Tigers. Y and H another second back. Lightning fast times for Worcester.
