A very competitive lacrosse field this season. I think Cornell's defense just let the ball into the net a few too many times............oh well. Or is it too soon to draw a conclusion? When the League went to the playoff format, we were likely a multi-bid League at least for the near term. I did fear that would change as the sport grew.

They had 6 in the NCAA just a few years ago. They need to stack more than 1 win per team against top 10 opponents. Of course I badly missed the call on Cornell and Yale this year, so don't bet the ranch on this opinion.

Vast majority of Tiger scoring this year came from frosh and sophs, and there were fine frosh scattered all over the league, which just took time to gel. Pr has #4 recruiting class in the country incoming, with H, Pe, C, Y, B all in the Top 20. I wouldn’t close up shop just yet. Princeton’s two recent brutal victories over Penn, the last team out, probably cost the Quakers a slot, and the Quakers in turn Cornell. Frankly, I think Maryland’s bid was ludicrous, going 4-5 over their last nine and being humiliated by bubble team Penn State 19-9 in the Big Ten tourney. Tigers couldn’t have asked for a better opening matchup in the NCAAs, can avenge an early-season loss.

I reversed course from my softball watching mistake and flipped on the last seven or eight minutes of the lax game. Mackesy was behind the open goal getting mugged by two defenders for a while, maintaining possession and control, finally getting around the defenders a bit and scoring while falling to the ground, negating the penalty that was finally callled. It was the time of the game where Penn had to be very aggressive, to zero avail. I think there were two more penalties wiped out by P goals at the end of the game. Hard fought 2 games with P pulling away twice in the second half. Always happy for Madalyn who took over several years ago under difficult circumstances and has done a very good job in a tough League.

Very talented though and if we can improve the defense for next season we should be back in the hunt. One player of note is freshman Luke Gilmartin (#77) who had a great game for Cornell as a short-stick defensive mid-fielder against Penn. He scored two goals, picked up three ground balls, and set up several scores. Local kid and very tough Central NY player. His father played for Cornell back in the mid-80's. Go Big Red!!!

That alone cost Penn two goals, Tigers had four EMO goals overall, and no penalties of their own, always a point of pride in Madalon’s world. Penn also got called for two cross checks to the head, which is a big no-no. It probably would have been a better idea for the Penn D to study its first Princeton loss and change up its approach, instead of leaving Carroll exposed to win it on his own, then foul in frustration when they got behind.

As I have mentioned before Cornell lax has struggled against physical teams like Penn. The Quakers knew if they wanted to beat Cornell they had to play a hard hitting game, which is exactly what they did. Physicality is part of the men's game and is one of the reasons lax has become so popular. For example, Cornell freshman Ryan Goldstein had a breakout season as most first year players never see the field. Ryan is currently 5'9" and only 145 lbs., but he's probably still growing and gets in the weight room he could become a dominant player for Cornell. Go Big Red!!!
