This guy is a superstar on the field and in the classroom. I hope that this will not set off anybody's alarms for political correctness: Is Alex African-American? His mother, shown in the highlight tape, is obviously Caucasian but both Alex and his older brother appear as though their father, not shown in the tape, might be African-American. I would love it if he were.

I saw a piece on Thomas last fall on MSG. I'm pretty sure his father is Afro-American.

He's a little small for D1 but is very strong. The key at any level of college fb for lead backs is staying healthy, something Mike McLeod has been able to do despite carrying the ball 30 plus times a game. He got a bit unlucky with that toe last year, but has proven to be incredibly durable since he got to Yale. Maybe Thomas will be able to do the same and ultimately fill those very big shoes when his time arrives.

Puzzled by your remark that his mother is Caucasian, then you ask if his father is African-American because you'd love it if he is. What difference does it make what race (or races) his parents are? Are you into genetic engineering?

Like I said in my first post, I'll try to choose my words carefully so as not to offend anybody's sense of political correctness.

Alex Thomas would seem to be an excellent student along with being a stand-out football player. African-Americans as a group have not done as well in our economy or our society historically. It is nice to see a young man with his promise scholastically represent his demographic background so well.

Hate to tell you this but YOU are the politically correct one--the definition of which is "factually and realistically INcorrect."
Our society goes back 230 years during which all groups have gone through a huge variety of experiences both good and bad, at times very, very good and at times horrible (like slavery).
At this time there is nothing unusual about blacks doing very, very well--both individually and as a group--
not only as professional athletes but as doctors, lawyers, business owners and executives, actors and other entertainers, authors, journalists, popular and classical musicians, educators and on through every profession and calling. In some demographics and job categories, their average incomes surpass those of whites.
I too wish Alex Thomas well, but he is not unique, neither in talent, nor--to your specific concern--in the
variety and quality of opportunities available to him.

Yale coaches already have Alex Thomas slotted as a starting kick returner (and the rumor is that Mcleod will get a chance to return kicks this year as he makes a bid for the NFL).

Look for Thomas to be one of 3 guys to take Mcleod's crumbs:

Galvez tore up Cornell and Holy Cross.
Farrell pummelled Brown in the rain.

Looks like Yale will again make a run at the top rushing attack in the country.

I would think the kick return guys would be Christo & Thomas and Mike getting some time also. I think the injury chance would be a concern for Mike to return alot. Better served as a RB. He also got a bunch of carries last year, so he will need some down time. Looks like the making for another run at the Title.

Carr, McLeod, and now Alex Thomas. Hardly seems fair to the rest of the Ivy League. All Coach Jack does is recruit the top running back in the league every four years. The reason he runs such a boring offense is he's got the best TB in the league. Guess it's time for Jack to go if the rest of the league wants a chance to win a title.

Get serious. McLeod is a decent back in a field of so-so running backs. He will not be drafted. He is not fast enough to play in the NFL and can't grow into an H back type. Somebody may sign him as a free agent, but he isn't as good as Hartigan or Dawson. He is also injury prone, and the idea that the coaches would let him run back kick-offs is pretty dumb. He also showed a total lack of class tow years ago in doing that inanae somersault into the end zone in the Columbia game, and his coach is an even bigger jerk for not benching him for that bush league stunt.

No more somersaults; don't act like you've never seen the end zone before. As far as talent, McLeod is a good back who has had a great offensive line. He just isn't NFL material because he doesn't have the speed to offset his size. But who knows. I never thought that Elias would stick, and McLeod is better than Elias. Look at Mike Hart and Ray Rice. They are about McLeod's size and in Rice's case probably a little faster. It will be interesting to see what they do. But unless McLeod runs aaround a 4.5 I don't think he cna play on Sundays.

I didn't think that Elias would "stick" either, but he proved the skeptics wrong. Success at sports is of course largely a product of desire. That is especially true at the fringe where Elias, Dawson and McLeod are in the NFL: not enough natural talent to guarantee a spot so it all comes down to "How badly do you want it?"

Injury prone???

-False- he had turf-toe! It's a fluke injury!

Dawson and Hartigan???

-I think Mcleod has at least placed himself as their equal, with the chance to surpass them!

I know you have never seen Mcleod run a 40 so let's let the NFL scouts do their job. We know he's the strongest player in Yale's team in the weight room (even more than the lineman).

final score of that high school football game:
Ansonia 62 Woodland Regional 35

Why was he still in the game in the 4th quarter? Would have been karmic to see a knee injury on one of those run-up-the-score jaunts.

High school coaches who run up the score should be banned from the game.

I want to see him on the field in college. What I got out of that video (probably juiced up a bit in the production room) was here's a good kid playing against a moderately good club behind a good line and having one hell of a day.
If this fella were THAT great, he wouldn't be playing Ivy ball. Let's revisit this discussion in 2010 or so.

Interesting. I am a bit skeptical about these kinds of videos, but you are way past me. First, you intuit that he's a "good kid", second that the opposition is only "moderately good" and third that he's running behind a good offensive line. How do you know all this?
At least you got the "one hell of a day" part right.

I played the game a bit; when I got hurt I used to break down film for the coach. To me, the Ansonia line had the jump all day and opened good holes for the runner. I thought (at least on defense which was all we saw) the other club was playing wait and see defense and not clogging the running lanes. Their tackling was unremarkeable, a lot of grabbing. The young man looks very good, but I say let's see how he does in college.
Now, Mr. F., you put me on the stand and I answered. You tell me :who else recruited this lad? I mean, in the big time? This isn't the first "wunderkind" Yale's recruited in CT; let's not get carried away.

Yes, his father is Afro-American.

I can assure you that the tape was not "juiced up a bit in production", because I produced it. It was not doctored in any way, it is actual speed.

For the record, Ansonia did not run up the score. Woodland Regional had the reputation of being a quick strike offense. They had a great player who was also sensational on that night. Will Volage, a speedster, returned two kickoffs of 90+ yards for TDs (and nearly a third), caught a TD pass and threw another. The score was 34-21 Ansonia at the half. Thomas' first two carries of the second half were long TD runs, and even when they were ahead by 20 to start the 4th quarter, Woodland still had plenty of time to score points. Unless, Woodland pulled their starters on defense, Ansonia was going to run on every down with their varsity players to work the clock. When Thomas got loose on his last TD run with 9 minutes left, the JVs went in.

Thomas is a legit 5'9, 185 and runs in the 4.55s to 4.59s range. He hopes to report to Yale at 195 pounds.

He is very similar to McLeod in his running style and strength. Thomas has been the reigning State Weightlifting Champion and record setter, in his weight class since his sophomore year. He benches 335, squats 465, and cleans 300. He will get bigger, stronger, and faster in Yale's Strength & Conditioning program.

The major difference between those three players:

BODY type.

Mcleod is 100% pure muscle. He has the type of physique that even the big body Hartigan never approached, nor the athletic Dawson came close to.

Listen, the Yale offensive line didn't magically become a bunch of Hulks from 3 years ago to last year- the difference was all Mcleod.

He is the strongest player on Yale's roster and I would venture the strongest player in the league.

I think he also protects himself well when he runs. It's hard to get a clean shot at him. Joe Sandburg was an extremely strong, perhaps over conditioned running back, but he continually was pulling something or getting a helmut in the thigh or the back or some other freak injury. The poor kid never was healthy. He ran a lot like McLeod but seemed to get his body in more compromed situations. Some guys like McLeod just have a knack for avoiding those things and staying on the field. It's a real attribute. It's pretty easy to get a leg caught in the wrong place or to suffer some type of injury that keeps you off the field. McLeod has been pretty remarkable at carrying a very heavy load and staying out on the field.

Lets not forget that mccleod came in the same year yale's current strength coach did. emil johnson has been credited with changing the offensive line into hulks in less than 3 years. the offensive line drove the defense off the ball atleast 3 yards every play for nearly all of the games. but thats not what makes mccleod a pro caliber back. he shows his talents when making the last man miss, dragging a would be tackler, or still managing to gain yards after being hit in the backfield.

As for being the strongest player, the only player on the roster that might be stronger is the morse kid who moved from fullback

Mike might not be the absolute strongest in the league, but pound for pound I'll put my money on him. At 200lb body weight, 357.5lb clean, 530lb squat, and 360lb bench, that's 6.24 times his body weight. And Morse benches in the mid 400's.

Alex Thomas played for the New Haven County all-stars vs the Fairfield County all-stars last night. This was a significantly better level of competition than he is used to, although New Haven has dominated the games the past four years.

Alex was New Haven's starting RB. Got 10 carries for 10 yards.

Don't draw any conclusions on Thomas from these All-Star-type games. He is not going to shine in them. First, he is playing in a shotgun spread offense with a zone scheme (he played in the I-formation in high school), which he is not familiar with. Second, he played behind, perhaps, the best offensive line in CT history the two seasons. In these games he is running behind kids who learned these offenses in a week of practice. Third, he is a rhythm runner. He has to get touches to get into a rhythm. In these games teams are trying to score points by throwing the ball, he never has a chance to carry the ball on consecutive snaps and it limits his ability to get into the flow of the offense. I wouldn't base his future on these type events. It's very rare for a running back to shine in the spread offense.

He's a solid player but let's not get carried away. There is a reason that no 1-A programs had any interest in him at all. He has great balance and vision but is small and not super fast. Also, he ran behind a tremendous line against second-rate competition, so there was great line surge and huge holes. In a situation where the O-line is not dominant, let's wait and see how he does.

He didn't even consider any D1 schools, because he wanted to play with the best school in the Ivy and a great team at Yale

Thomas didn't consider any D1 (1-A) teams because there was zero interest in him from any of them. He had no scholarship offers. If he had been recruited by any 1-A programs, then who knows.

As for the comparison between Meyers and Thomas, they are not even in the same universe. Meyers had legitimate offers from schools such as Florida and Michigan. He's a four star player from Rivals, 3 from Scout. Thomas had no 1-A offers, not even from UConn. Zero stars from Rivals, zero stars from Scout. While these scouting services are far from perfect, there is a huge difference between a 4 star player and a zero star player.

I think that Meyers should also skip college and go right to the NFL. I would like to team them in my backfield. I don't have anybody half as good as either.

My comparison between the two was strictly as football recruits that I think will have impact, not as rb's. I just think the Princeton kid will be a big time player and I think he could do it on either side of the ball. Hey, I'm not knocking Alex at all, I'm just disputing the claim that he's the best player in the incoming class. I say good luck to all the kids entering and let them play and be rightfully judged down the road.

First of all, Thomas did have interest from D1 schools in the Big East (including UConn), ACC, and Big Ten. He set his sights on Yale after his sophomore season and made that clear to schools who expressed interest. Because, he wasn't going to waiver on Yale (or the other Ivy's that recruited him), schools weren't willing to waste an offer on a kid who wasn't interested in the glitz and glamour of D1 football. Once he knew Yale was interested, his choice was made. Second, Meyers was recruited as a linebacker, not a running back. Your comparing apples to oranges. And I wouldn't put too much stock in those recruiting services, unless you attend their various combines your not going to be rated.

The best recruit for the Ivy League this year goes to Yale, but he's NOT Alex Thomas.

The name: Jake Stoller- defensive lineman from Ohio who had scholarships from Wisconsin and Iowa. Looks like a Hollander clone. Big, strong, dominant at the point of attack, Jewish.

This is in contrast to Meyers whose scholarships were largely due to his lax abilities (which seem considerable and he deserves full credit).

None of Meyers' FB schools play lacrosse. How could his scholarship offers be due to that sport? (And please don't say Florida offered him a FB scholarship even though they didn't think he was worthy of one because they were afriad he would play lacrosse instead - it's not like they lack skilled FB prospects to take his place).

Meyers dad is a Florida alumni, which may have played a part as well.

Just doing some homework on the League with how things sit for this year and next leads me to conclude there will be some suprises, particularly with those not talking much. Some new stories will emerge and I might put money that within the next 4 years, one team will win three. Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and California recruits will prove the case.

You guys sound like the Penn guys on the BB board. Let's give it a rest until Thomas actually appears on an Ivy field.

Even I agree that this thread must be retired.

I am worried that too much has been made of Thomas and he will never be able to perform up to expectations. He is very small, and I am not sure that he can take the hits at this level.

Give him a chance to work into the system and prove himself without all the pressure.
