Both teams can wear color jerseys if the home team and conference both agree beforehand in writing.

There are so many great stories involving Steve Spurrier that at least one is often unexpectedly relevant.

LSU famously likes to wear its all white uniforms at home, so that's why almost all photos of the tigers show them in white, away *OR* at home.

But per some regulation, whether NCAA or SEC, the hosts need the agreement of the visiting team to do so. Virtually all visiting teams give their consent.

Of course, when everybody does one thing, you can usually count of Steve Superior to do the opposite. When Spurrier was coaching at Florida, he would insist upon wearing white when visiting Tiger Stadium, simply because he knew that LSU perferred to wear white.

You gotta love that guy. He's special.

So *why* did Columbia and Princeton agree to both wear home unis?

Columbia and Cornell have done so in the past. But I presume it was to promote the Empire Bowl.

Why do it at Princeton?

Presumably, because Columbia took the trouble to ask.

I thought the look was great, with even the helmets in color contrast. Tigers may have gone with black jersey/orange pants AFTER Columbia’s request, rather than wear white pants, orange jerseys with black pants, all black, or my all-time bottom-dweller, the all-orange blood clot outfit.

And you thought man-in-motion pass routes were complicated.

Mandatory white jerseys went away with the disappearance of newsprint and advent of HDTV.

All you need is color contrast. Nobody watches sports in black and white anymore.

And there is no such thing a home jerseys anymore. Each team has at least three, to be worn whenever, wherever.

NCAA rules were modified in 2009 to read:

"If the home team wears colored jerseys, the visiting team may also wear colored jerseys, if and only if the following two conditions have been satisfied:
a. The home team has agreed in writing prior to the game; and
b. The conference of the home team certifies that the jersey of the visiting team is of a contrasting color."

I thought the game looked great. An Ivy version of USC-UCLA.

Although I prefer certain other Tiger uniforms (not the pumpkins), UCLA versus USC is a game to look forward to each year, in significant part due to that classic visual. Light blue makes a nice contrast.
