I give tremendous credit to Erin McDermott. Athletic directors are competitive people, just like coaches and players. They, too, know that they are judged on wins and losses.

Further, McDermott knows that, if it comes down to a spending arms race, Harvard is among the likely winners in our conference. But McDermott is not firing the first shot, even though obviously her predecessor Bob Scalise was willing to do so back in 2007.

I think McDermott's approach is best for Harvard and for our conference, AT THIS TIME.

Waiting and watching is the optimal strategy more often than is commonly realized. We all have such itchy trigger fingers. It usually feels better to be doing SOMETHING, even if we're not sure it's the right thing.

I hope that Princeton, which M3 showed has at least nominally formed the infrastructure to administer NIL's, will stand down insofar as aggressively raising money is concerned. We all know that, if the time comes, Princeton and Harvard could raise a lot of money quickly. There's no need to jump off the starting blocks right when Livvy Dunne and the Cavinder twins do. We can catch up if we want.

NILs and the transfer portal are going to severely change what it means to be a Division I college athlete. I'm not at all that sure it's something we in the Ivy League want to be a part of.

Well played AO. I see what you did there. Slipping in another reference to Livvy and the Cavinder twins.
