Subject: Penn and Princeton Need to Leave Now, or Play in New Jersey

Nobody was injured, but this morning a tractor-trailer tanker carrying a load of gasoline exploded into a massive fireball under the Route 7 overpass above I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut. In the best of times, this segment of I-95 is a parking lot during both morning and afternoon rush hour traffic.

I imagine they need to inspect the overpass for melted steel and other damage. If that takes more than several hours to do, the Penn and Princeton women's lacrosse teams need to leave for Yale right now. It is going to be nasty on the only alternative, the Hutchinson/Merritt Parkway.

Should they play their semi-final game in Princeton? That would make life easier for all concerned, including parents and local fans. Then the winner can drive up to New Haven leisurely on Saturday. If the other semi-final is Yale over Harvard, the Bulldogs would still have home field advantage in the final.

The complete route 7 overpass will be torn down. 95 will be completely closed until at least Monday morning. Not good.

160,000 vehicles pass that point on I-95 every week day.

All official school activities in Norwalk canceled today, including sports and practices.

The Norwalk High School senior prom will go on as scheduled.

exit 14, rt 7 exit off 95 is about 500 yds further. It however is a main exit connecting with US1 aka Post Road, leads directly to Lowes at US 1 plus post road leads directly to Norwalk hospital. They are working round the clock to tear down the mangled overpass. I can tell you it is messing up Darien traffic. I drove my daughter to the train station at 4 and had to take a real long cut to get around back home every street indirectly related to 95 was jammed. I still beat everyone home, but I probably went 3 miles out of my way to get there

It's really incredible what the engineering, demolition and hauling crews have done in two days. Sixty hours ago, that site was a raging inferno covered by a two-lane steel-reinforced concrete bridge. It looked like a finale scene from one of the first two Terminator movies which, by the way, are two of the finest flix ever made.

Now, there's nothing there. The goal was to have that stretch of I-95 passable by Monday morning rush hour. Northbound lanes are already back to normal Saturday night. Astounding.

See? Penn and Princeton could have played in Jersey on Friday afternoon and the Quakers could have leisurely driven up to New Haven at 55 mph this evening.
