Howdy Eva! Read the gospels and you'll see exactly what basis Christians have to be "good" or "moral." (Ditto for most other scriptures.) It will also give you a good way to measure how true an alleged adherent is to the principles of their religion. In almost every single case, if one is familiar with the principles of a religion then it is easy to show how immoral acts are not representative of the actual doctrine.
I'll also point out that atheism is itself a belief system and thus as vulnerable to misinterpretation and misuse in the quest for personal power. People's exhibit #1: Vladmir Lenin.
When I was an atheist, I was as you are, totally appalled by the evils done in the name of any religion, especially Christianity. Now that I'm a Christian, I find I hate it ten times worse. I can't tell you the number of times I've had to resist the urge to slap some self-described Christian upside the head while screaming "read your own damn book!"
That's a longwinded way of saying, simply, to avoid the philosphical error of confusing actual doctrine with what some adherents claim as doctrine. To use your example, if Bush claims that his government is Christian, then he is most certainly lying. Or to look at it another way, since he claims to be upholding the principles of Liberty, it only proves he is a liar, and does not in any way invalidate Liberty itself.
