Sofla-- Well, Lincoln was certainly correct about the "money power," but the excerpt from the letter may indicate nothing more than Lincoln, himself, was aware that corporations had been "enthroned"-- since he certainly and vigorously waged war on their behalf. I prefer to judge a man by his deeds anyway. And there is no dispute when the facts of that period are read: Lincoln did promote the power of centralized government in deed and in fact-- which is the definition of a statist BTW.

Another fact of interest: the secession of Southern states from the United States was legal according to the Constitution. The unity of the various states was bound only by the *consent* of the various states. The fact that Lincoln was willing to wage war in order to "preserve the Union" was not so much nationalist as it was statist, since the union itself was supposed to be based on the *consent* of the states in the first place. Also, one cannot refute that this war-- The War Between the States or the War of Secession-- was an historical turning point that consolidated and enhanced the power of not only the Federal government but also the corporate, monied interests that have continued to rise in power to this day. So, was Lincoln used as he himself used the cause of slavery to inflame hapless peons in the North to fight for the Union? Or was he aware all along that a centralized Federal government controlled by corporate royalty would emerge after the war?
