Unfortunately there is a BIG difference between the teachings and practices of what is supposed to be a "universal" Church, and the teachings of Jesus, as they were originally. A lot of mythology was added after Jesus was crucified by the Romans, and also bits and pieces of other religions, such as Mithraism. The emphasis since then has been on maximizing the number of members, never mind their quality, while Jesus tried to maximize the quality of members, never mind their quantity.
