Subject: Musketeer Madness Recap

Like many posters on this board, I was eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the 2001-2002 Muskies, and had to be impressed with both the vets and the newcomers.

Amy Waugh- Is there anything she can't do? I would guess that she felt guilty by scoring 8 today (at least during the women's scrimmage). She clearly has the PG mentality needed to keep the team in the hunt for the A-10.

Reetta Piipari- Ditto, only it will be interesting to see how she readjusts to playing predominantly shooting guard. Her PG skills will be needed when Amy rides the bench.

Kate Kreager - If today was an indication, she is clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with in the frontcourt. For those who read the Enquirer this morning, she shot 65% from the field last year, and was a great 2-way presence. Even when the starters were scrimmaging against the guys, Katie seemed to be doing really well on the defensive side of the ball.

Shavon Bell - She looked steady at the 3G/SF slot, particularly her defense. She also slashed to the hole a number of times, and it will be interesting to see how often she becomes an offensive option this year.

Colleen Yukes - If the scrimmage against the guys was any indicator, she may start at center - at least early on in the season. She did an okay job in terms of boxing out and going after the glass, but had trouble at times finishing baskets on the offensive end.

Aida Sarajilia - Her defense was also markedly improved; her speed down the court in transition seemed to be something she worked on during the off-season. It was evident that she has the green light to take the outside shot, but it was off today. And yet, she was mature enough not to let it get her down; she was still wreaking havoc down low in the paint.

And there were two freshmen that showed that they may see significant PT early:

Alexis Henderson - She almost singlehandedly kept the White team in the women's scrimmage today. She was the only player on her squad to score in double figures, and has quick enough hands that she can force an occasional steal and kick the transition game in gear.

Ashleigh Cuncic - Definitely the fastest of the freshmen out there today. Actual speed and game speed are different entities; she showed many opportunities to be disruptive on defense. She wasn't too bad on the offensive side of the ball either; she had a hot hand from behind the arc.

Kim Neidermayer and Dani Statuto also saw action in the second scrimmage; they seemed to be having the tougher time adjusting to the system, though both showed flashes of potential during the scrimmage. Nikki Wells only played when the guys were scrimmaging the gals in the first part of the scrimmage.

As for the starters, they went down as : PG-Waugh, SG-Piipari, 3G/SF-Bell, PF-Kreager, C-Yukes.

During the Blue-White scrimmage, here were the teams: (Blue won over White 43-23)

B-Waugh(PG), Cuncic(SG), Neidermayer(SF), Sarajilia(SF), Kreager(C)

W-Piipari(PG), Statuto(SG), Bell(SF), Henderson(PF), Yukes(C)

For those who did make it (amidst a sparse crowd), what were your thoughts?
