We have a 13 week old female rat terrier. Our first dog. Brought her home when she was 8 weeks old. The first few nights she slept in our room in a crate by the bed, but every time we stirred she woke and cried and barked and had a hard time settling. As a result were barely sleeping. So we moved her to the room next to ours. We were prepared to get up in the middle of the night to let her out to eliminate and we were also prepared for some crying each time we put her to bed, BUT..we have been doing this for over a month and it is not getting any better.

We try to keep her up till 10 or 11 with lots of play and training and snuggle time. She will cry and jump and yelp in her crate for about 10 minutes and then settles to sleep. She usually sleeps till about 3:30AM and then needs to go outside. No problem. But when we return her to her crate at 3:30 she cries and cries - usually at least 30 minutes - then will fall back asleep but only for another 30 minutes. She then barks, whines etc until it is time for us to get up for work anyway (often for more than an hour). Then we take her out of the crate and after about 30 minutes of hanging out with us as we get ready for work she is zonked and falls asleep on the floor.

I know she would probably sleep like a baby if we let her sleep in our bed, but we really don't want to. It's important that that is our space.

So - sorry for such a long message - but we are desperate. I know part of the charm of rat terriers is that they like to be close to their owners and snuggle, but we need some sleep. Our vet pretty much just says we have to ignore her in the other room in the crate and she'll get in the pattern, but it has been almost a month with no improvement. Any advice, tips, words of encouragement would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

Why Dogs Don`t Live As Long As People

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.

The dog`s owners; Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.

I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.

They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker`s family surrounded him.

Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed
]to accept Belker`s transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker`s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me.

I`d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life -like loving everybody and being nice, right?"

The four-year-old continued,
"Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don`t have to stay as long."

MESSAGE FROM MISS GRACIE AND CANDY:

This Saturday July 17th Animal Planet will show the Best of Breed
competition from the Eukenuba Tourament of Champions from the Harrisburg
show. That is the show where they asked if they could photograph my Gracie in
the crowd. It will be on from 8pm-10pm. EST.It will probably be her "30
seconds" of fame but I was very proud that they wanted an AHT to be
included. She really did a "look at me" for the camera man so I can`t wait to
see her.I was so proud they asked me that I started crying so I hope the
camera totally left my face out!!

Recently me and my wife purchased two rat terriers for our children,Making the 150 mile trip to the pups I noticed they were very shy and scared as always with young pups.Being they are four months old it is now been a week and very little progress has been made in taming these two.I now am sure that they have been handled very sparingly..........I have been bighten twice by the worst of the two and I am aware that it is only out of fear not life or death. My questions are how to tame these two or do I call the gentlemen back for reimbursement?I felt like that by now some progress would be made and I guess in reality it has.......too some degree.(They now dont run barking freekishly under the porch, but stay well out of my reach. If any body has any suggestions a 6 and 3 year old would be very grateful.

Hi Anne,

I just want to thank you again for your help with the issues I have had with Kyle (now 15 weeks old toy rat)! Youve been a huge help!

I recently posted a message about my pups eye lids and bottom lip swelling. It must have itched a bit but never stopped the pup from being a fun loving and joyful dog! It just looked terrible.

After three trips to the vet I finally found the best doctor there and he found a mite in his skin. I was afraid this may have come from my 16yo cockatiel but he said that this mite is diferent. We are finally treating the problem correctly now!

I do have a question though. From all I have read about dogs in general and rats, they will regularly test your dominance and patience. My pup never once had a problem on a leash but just recently, say a week ago, he started pulling back and not moving. I talked to a friend who said just pull him anyway, he will get tired of being pulled around and start walking again. That worked a time or two but stopped quickly. This seems a bit harsh and doesnt appeal to me. What do you suggest? He weighs 3.5 pounds and I have a 6 foot leash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

I am in Delaware and need a new home for my rat terrier Mandie. She is a 4 year old spayed female and very sweet. She needs a lot more attention then I can give and I have developed an allergy to her. I have something called fibromyalgia and it has made allergies worse as time goes by. I am not asking for money just a good home. Email me and I will send a pic. She is a blue tri. She loves laying under the covers cuddled next to someone, plays fetch and will sit happily on your lap, Teach2003@aol.com

About two days ago I noticed Cookie, my one year old rattie, had a little patch of skin on her back that was kind flacky, scaley-a little smaller than a dime. I kind of flaked it off and forgot about it. Then today I found she had maybe 6 to 8 of them scattered around her back and sides. Well I paniced and took her to the vet's. They took a scraping and said there was no signs of mites or wildlife growing on her skin. She is on antibotics and medicated antibacterial shampoo now but the vet really had no idea why it was set off- anne- you are so great with web sites- got a good one for me? any thoughts would be helpful. It is kind of funny because almost all of them are on the black part of her body- strange. and only on her back and sides- anyway any thoughts please share- she is my baby-- ty-- vic

My toy rat terrier is 2 years old. We have had him for 2 months and he is usually a joy. Lately when he does not get his way he gets real sneaky. When we have him get off the bed to sleep, the first time he chewed my quilt and last night he tore open his sleep pillow. This seems to be becasue he did not get his way. Is this normal behaviour?

HELP !

Im the proud owner of a new 12 week old Toy Rat and loving it ! Ive had him two weeks (on paper with the crate in the small space) and started crate training two days ago. I do have a slight problem though. I work 9 hours a day and get home during lunch for a short time for him to eat and a short walk. Ive notice he is fine the first half of the day but poops in the afternoon before I can get home. Im so afraid of causing him to forming a bad habit and he will never fully be crate traing i.e pottie trained.

Im I doing something wrong or is he just too young to fully understand (or bladder too small), or am I just being impatient and he will he stop this eventually on his own?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....Please send to the email as well or I may not see the response!

Thx, Gary

We are thinking about getting a Rat Terrier. The more I research on the internet, the more confused I am. I have two pages printed out that say the exact opposite. We have an 8 year old daughter who loves animals. She would be playful but respectful of the dog. We live in a house with a fenced in yard but would keep him in most of the time. He would be at home 6-8 hours a day, 4 days a week. While I know all are different, based on this minimal information, is a Rat right for us. ANy help is appreciated.

Just wanted to invite everyone to join in on our Photo Contest. We've revamped our site and added a lot of things, including the photo contest. At this time we've got it set up as a weekly contest, but I'm thinking that's just too short of a time frame and I think I'm going to make it a bi-weekly contest. Two weeks to enter pictures and two weeks of voting. Winners get products from Bark 'n Bath (www.barknbath.com) - all natural grooming products for dogs. Voting on the first contest starts on today, Wednesday, Nov. 5th.

Anyhow, come check out the new site and let me know what you think. :)

Hi everyone! I have a 1 year old Rattie named Cookie. She is the sweetest, most cuddly dog I have ever known! She housetrained very easily at 11 weeks, and at this age, she can be indoors for 9+ hours at my apartment and not make a mess inside.

But when we go spend a weekend at my boyfriend's house, she goes in the house, even after she's been let out to go. My bf has a dog too, a large yellow lab mix named Rose. She is a sweet dog and Cookie and she get along very well. But I think Cookie is trying to mark territory or dominate Rose.
Cookie is size blind!

How can I change this behavior? She knows it's wrong. She runs and hides when she knows we've discovered she did it. It's really awful to be cleaning up messes all the time.
:( What can I do?

Hey everyone:)

We just recently this past April lost our very loved Rat Terrier of twelve years to old age. After a few months of healing our Fmaily has decided to adopt another Rat Terrier. So We found a breeder who has a Female Due in about 6 weeks. The mother is WONDERFUL! She is SO loving and sweet, I absoulutly love her:-). We are going to go pick out our girl when she is born because we want to make sure they dont Dock her tail, our last RatT had a tail and we would like this one to have one as well. Then 6-8 weeks later we are taking our preciouse baby home:) Cant wait.

Can anyone point me to some websites about raising puppies or give me some adivice? We havnt had a puppy in the house in 12 years. AND we also have an 11 yr old 80lb dog here whose going to be quit the pain to get to accept the new tiny puppy. But she REALLY loved Cookie(our late RatT) so we hoep this will go smoothly.

Thanks bunches

Bethany

PS)My mom wants to name is Cookie, just like our old Rat terrier so she can use the same nicknames and songs she sings,lol..weirdo:-)

Hello! I have a pup sired by a dog from ABC kennels -"ABC's Major" and "ABC's Puddles/Pebbles" are the parents. I am looking for information about these dogs, and would appreciate any help folks can provide. I need to know if 'Pebbles' is the same female as 'Puddles' - I believe the registration slip I have may have an error so clarification is appreciated. I am also interested in genetic information about these dogs, any history of luxating patellas or demodex in particular, but any info relating to health issues is appreciated. I have contacted the e-mail link for ABC and no response has been given to my inquiries, hence this post here. This is an honest effort to see information about a potential brood prospect that I have. Because genetic issues seem to be inflamatory issues, PLEASE DO NOT REPLY IN ANY WAY HERE. I IN NO WAY WANT TO START ANYTHING, I just want honest information! Please use my e-mail for any responses. Thank you!

My main question about the rat terrier is if the rat terrier is a real barker in the house? For example does it bark alot when people walk by your window or home? Or does it just bark until corrected? He doesn't want a dog that barks all the time. This is my husband's question. My question is whether the rat terrier will like to sit on the couch and be loving? I want a playful and loving companion pet. I live near Tampa Florida. Could you suggest any breeders in the area? Also would these breeders allow me to visit just to know more about the breed in person?

Thank you.

Hi,
I have a 11 week old rat terrier that is just adorable. He is completely crate trained, and has never had an accident in his crate. The last week I have noticed that about 1 hr after taking him outside, he urinates in the house. He didnt do this the first 2 weeks that we had him. We havent done anything different with him to start this habit. Any suggestions on what this might be, and what I can do to fix the situation?
Thanks.

LURE COURSING
9:00 AM, MAY 25TH (rain or shine)
WARWICK COUNTY PARK
ROUTE 23 & COUNTY PARK ROAD
Elverson, Pa
Contact for Details: RUSLTHMUSL@AOL.COM
AGENDA
The Pennsylvania Bull & Terrier Association will be picking up where the Independence Club left off by introducing ourselves and opening up our "lure coursing" system to the public. Please come join us in scenic Chester County for a day of the most thrilling "OFF LEAD" experience for any breed. Traditionally sight hounds (greyhounds/afghans/borzoi/whippets) have been used as it allows them to exercise their prey drive without the "prey" demonstrating the natural "visual-hunting" traits of the breed It's inexpensive, it's fun, and it's an intense work out for your dog, while allowing you to enjoy fishing/ hiking/ biking/ horseback riding trails with family and friends that are available at Warwick.
Ø $5 donation per dog for as many runs as you like
Ø Vet wrap will be for sale to protect due claws/front legs from moving wire
Ø ALL breeds welcome!
Ø Muzzles will be available for more dog-aggressive participants
Ø Please bring a crate for each dog
Ø There are clean restrooms on grounds and we will be selling refreshments
DIRECTIONS
Take Route 100 North or South (relative to the direction you are coming from) to Route 23 and head West towards Elverson/St. Peter's Village. Go approx. 3 miles to County Park Road on your left (look for dog show /lure coursing signs & go slow it is a very small road in between 2 houses). Make that left and the park entrance is a ¼ down the road on your left.

My RT is 11 months old and weighs 10 lbs. She is about 12 inches tall at the shoulder. She was 12 lbs, but the vet said I was overfeeding her. My dog is food-obssessed, and I had been giving in to her every whim. The doc said some people really overfeed their rat terriers. Now I think Chili is too thin. I can see her bones (including pelvis bones. I am going to increase her meals, still very few treats, but I am wondering if this should be done gradually?

I have a 10 month old rat terrier named PD. He's white with black patches on his fur. He is our baby and we don't know what we did before we had him (of course we had a lot less chewed up things in the house then...hehe). Anyways...just in the past few days, PD has gotten a LOT of black spots and freckles...not just little ones...some very big ones. The spots aren't on his fur, but on his skin. Does anyone know if this is normal for a 10 month old? Thanks! -Andrea

I just wanted to let everyone know that I think rat terriers are the best dogs! A year ago on Valentine's Day I was surprised with a rat terrier bought for me from the pound. She was 2 at the time and she was wonderful from the start! Her name is Zoe and she was already potty trained when we got her! She absolutely fell in love with me and ever since, for a year, she follows me around everywhere I go! She is wonderful, just like a person, and if you have any doubts on purchasing a rat terrier, don't because they are the best dogs! Her personality is amazing, unlike any other dog I have ever had. I love her to death and you should own one indefinitely! The only thing I am concerned about is that she has abandonment issues. Every time I leave, she thinks I am leaving her forever. Does anyone have any suggestions for curing her issues? I am home with her a lot so it is not that I am never there, she just gets worried because I think someone left her once and that is how she ended up at the pound. Let me know if you think of anything I could do! Thanks!

The list is below. I have UKCI numbers on most of them, and colors on a few,(thanks Shelly) My biggest question: does anyone know if these were among the Decker Giants? I'm not looking to raise Decker's, just trying to research my Annie,Pennie, and Dozer's background. Does anyone know where I can get photos of the Deckers listed below? The only photos I found were Decker's Tuffy and Decker's Penny. Thanks for ANY info you can give me about these dogs:

Decker's Penny
Decker's Tuffy
Decker's Sugar
Decker's Buford
Decker's Puffer
Decker's Rowdy

I currently have a couple puppies needing homes.

Badger is a Black/white male 4 months old. Carries chocolate and possibly blue. Estimated size is 13 inches 13 pounds.

Slammer is a chocolate/white male 9 weeks old. estimated size is 14 inches 16 pounds. He will carry blue.

I also have 3 newborns not spoken for. 1 black tri and 2 chocolates. The black tri and 1 chocolate should get 14 inches 16-18 pounds and the other chocolate should get 13 inches 11-13 pounds. These will carry chocolate and possibly blue.

Pictures of parents, puppies, grandparents and some great grandparents are available upon request.

My rat terrier is 2 years old. He eats a good dog food and we give him linatone everyday. He has been tested for thyroid problems and allergies and everything is ok, but he seems to shed alot. We brush him and give him a bath every 2 to 3 weeks. Is this normal or is there something else that we should be using. I use bioguard shampoo that I got from the kennel where we leave him and have also used oatmeal shampoo from petsmart. Does anyone have anymore ideas on what to do.

We just bought a new puppy named Buzz. Hes the cutest little thing.....when he's sleeping...lol...We are having such a hard time with training him to go potty outside and not all over the house. The place we bought him said he has been in a cage of the past 2 months so he has no problem with going in his creat, on the floor, on the couch, on the bed,.....anywhere. We spend alot of time out side with him but he seems to hold it and goes when he comes inside. We can't seem to get the message through to him that going outside is a good thing....since hes has yet to go outside. We are also having problems disaplining him because he doesn't seem to care about the tone of our voices. Hes half Rat Terrier and half Italian Greyhound...and they say that the crosses seem to be more hyper....but hyper doesn't seem to apply to this dog....hes beyond hyper. We love him though and will keep trying to show him the "right" way. If anyone could help us with our little problems....please feel free to advise me.

Is there a way to estimate how large a 4 month old Rat Terrier will be at maturity? When I purchased my rat terrier puppy, the breeder stated that he was a Type A, Mini, and would mature at about 15 lbs. His dam was said to weigh 12.5 lbs. and his sire 14 lbs. At 10 wks he weighed 7.5 lbs. At 3 months he weighed 10 lbs. He is now 4 months old, weighs 16 lbs., and still has very large feet. I was hoping his growth rate would slow down, but no luck. Thank you, Robbin

Hi. I have a great Rat Terrier that I love very much who is five years old. She has been tested for anemia and thyroid problems and the blood panel always comes back normal. She has had numerous blood test and they always come back that she is healthy. Which of course i am very happy about. The problem is she is losing hair on her neck and legs and also little spots on her back. No one has any idea why. The hair once it is gone does not grow back. She is on very good food so i do not think that is the issue. I would love to hear if anyone has had a similar problem or knows what may be causing her to lose hair. Thank you.

We have 3 rat terriers, one male and two females. Each litter we have gotten a blue puppy, so far 2 males and 1 female. My husband sold the blue male puppy to a breeder? who said she needed a blue male to breed to her apricot female to get silver puppies. We gave the first male away as the parents are not registered and no one here knows anything about them. The female is two days old, and this woman wants her too as soon as she is old enough. She says she can register them, but it will cost her a lot of money. What do we do? We sold the male for $35.

we bought our first rat terrier in sept. and we have fell head over heels in love with our little Cookie. She is just so smart, cute, and loving. she proved very easy to housebreak by offering her little treats when she would go outside and do her jobs. also she learned to sit, roll over, dance, and shake hands for treats. now the problem-- she likes her treats more than she likes her real chow. and the little smartie tries to 'tell' us she needs to go out more than she really needs to because she will run out and come right back in and go sit by the treat box. Also she is chewing up everything she can get her little teeth into. we bought her $40 worth of chew toys and she just turned her nose up at them and went to work on the carpet. not only is she chewing things up-- she eats them. did we create a problem by giving her treats-- causing her not to get what she needs from her chow? i can not keep things out of her reach because like i said- it is carpets, electric cords, couches-- nothing is safe from her. she is not even left at home alone and when she is she does not chew as much as when we are here. our Cookie is turing into a cookie monster-- any ideas?? thanks- vic

I have a 4 1/2 month old RT (born in July 2002) named Niko "Little One." He is the love of my life! He is a "toy," Type A, male, tri-color pup. He presently weighs about 6 1/2 lbs and has a pleasant, intelligent, playful temperament.
Recently, my vet has been asking me whether I am going to neuter him, but I am reluctant to do this because he really is such a beautiful, wonderfully tempered dog. I would love a nice family to have a pup as sweet as he is.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to link up with knowledgeable breeders who might be interested in examining my pup, and hopefully connecting him with a similarly bred female. Money is not the issue for me, I just love my pup!
I have also looked for local RT clubs, but have been unsuccessful. I am in Miami Beach, FL, and the closest club is a couple hundred miles away.......

Thanks!

I see a lot of posts here but not many answers. We have the sweetest little puppy here that is so hyper I think she might someday explode. She gets lots of exercise so that is not the problem. She also has lots of toys. I know she is a puppy and hope this subsides, but also think because rats are in the jack russell family this might be how she is going to be permanently. I like her independence, I really do, and she has been very easy to housetrain using the pads and constantly taking her outside. We just get control of her agression and will take her to obedience school when she is old enough. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Suzanne

Hey everybody,

I have a litter coming in about 10 days. They are from Sonny and Lenny. Lenny like to throw lots of chocolate females. Feel free to check out my website at www.imageevent.com/ratterriers I have 600+ pictures of my 4 adults and the last litter from Reese and Lenny. They are high quality pictures, so you can see them in great detail. If you like, I can email anybody that may be interested as soon as they are born so you can check out the new pupps right away and decide on one. I normally dock the tails and remove the dew claws 2 days after they are born, so if you want a tail you would have to let me know right away. That is why I am posting this so soon. All of my rats are type A's and are fed a high quality kibble(Innova and Healthwise mixed together) and a B.A.R.F. (bones and raw meat) Lenny is a black and white male 16 lbs and Sonny is a Black and white tricolor 13 lbs.

Thanks,
Jay

This may be a dumb question, but do Rats dig alot? I already have a Brittany who has dug my yard into a minefield. I am looking for a replacement dog eventually (Britanny is 13), and like what I see about the Rats, but I don't want my yard destroyed again! Yes, I'm writing in regard to my 3 month old 3 pound pure bred rat terrier. She had ear mites and we had been treating her every other day as directed by the vet. Well, the ears look a lot cleaner. She's rubbing the sides of her face making the fur fall out. Her eyes are watering and blood shot. We thought it may have been the shampoo since she broke out all over her tummy with small red pimple like dots and her skin was very pink. So we have changed the shampoo and her stomach appears better but she's still digging at the sides of her face. I was wondering if you may know of something else we could do. The vet looked at her eyes and seen nothing abnormal. We have also tried to change her foods. Also is there a reason why my pup constantly tries to eat hair off the rug or jumps into my hair to eat it? We are constantly vacuuming to keep her from getting much. She never goes outside or around other dogs. I have no other pets in the house either. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Lillian

Hi. I just bought a rat terrier puppy. She is an odd color, and was hoping that someone can help distinguish what color she actually is... She is a tannish/reddish/yellowish color with either dark brown or black nose, trim on ears and a small patch of the same color down her back from the withers to tail. The rims of her eyes are about the same color as most of her body. I am wondering either tan sable, choc. apricot, or blue fawn???? I can send pics if you would like to take a shot at this one. I am left clueless, and the breeder just said she was brown and white. When I looked up the color chart, there was no brown listed. THanks in advance...
