For Immediate Release!

The public is invited to attend "From Slavery to the Prisons: Reparations Now! - a report from the World Conference Against Racism" that will take place on Thursday, September 13, 2001 from 7 to 9pm at the Fellowship Hall at 390 - 27th St. in Oakland between Broadway and Telegraph. Call (510) 625-1106 for more information.

States Matthew Willis, the local chair of the African People's Solidarity Committee, the organization which is sponsoring the event, "The United States is threatening to boycott the World Conference Against Racism if it includes a discussion on reparations for slavery. We are sponsoring this event because we feel that reparations to African people is long overdue and is the way forward to a positive future for all of us. It is time for the white community in particular to give an honest look at the historical basis for the wealth of white society and the misery and oppression affecting African people everywhere on earth."

The forum will feature as the keynote speaker Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Historian and Professor of Ethnic Studies at California State University at Hayward and Director of the Indigenous World Association, who will have attended the World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa from August 28 to September1, 2001. Dunbar-Ortiz has written in support of reparations for African people according to the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Dunbar-Ortiz is also the author of Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie (Verso) and The Great Sioux Nation. Also speaking will be Bakari Olatunji, the Oakland president of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM), an international organization dedicated to democratic rights for African people. InPDUM will have also participated in the international conference in South Africa where they have proposed a workshop on "The Question of Reparations, Slavery and Beyond" which will also address the issue of genocide in the U.S. based on 1 of 10 African men in prison

The African People's Solidarity Committee works under the leadership of the African working class-led Uhuru Movement and has organized for 25 years in the white community to build a movement of white people's reparations to the African community. Call (510) 625-1106 or email uhurureparations@yahoo.com.
