Before I get into the rest, I want you to consider one or two things. You drive through out the United States and use both a cell phone and a CB. I know I lose a signal especially on CB in certain areas and I’m sure you do to. Have you ever stopped to wonder why? Before I retired, on occasion, I had to locate buried utility wires or breaks in the wires for various reasons. I used the best hand held equipment equipment available to accomplish this chore. My level of success was about 85%. Some areas just seemed dead.
The reason for this phenomenon is simple. The percent of iron mineral in the soil determines the magnitude of a natural magnetic field for any given area. Areas which are comprised predominately of red soil seem to hold the most iron mineral. Maybe that’s why roses do so well in the south. Roses like iron.
Early settlers knew of the old stick in the ground at sunset trick to keep their direction in prespective.
Some even had compasses. Some compasses were more accurate than others. Some people knew how to use a compass and some did not. Good maps were in short supply in past history as well as good compasses and a working knowledge of the same. You know compasses like to show you where iron
things are located. In early America A compass could find wagon wheel rims, iorn stays in ladies garments, horse shoes and all sorts of stuff. I once owned a boat I used on the Tennessee river . I often used it a night. The compass I used came out of a Sherman tank. It had several adjusting rings with iorn inserts to compensate it so it would point to true north instead of magnetic north. It also had to be compensated for east, west, and south.. It was also checked against a master compass. I am not totally sure and need to research it further, but it seems to me there was a company that made a very fine compass in 18 something or other.
They advertised their compass was so accurate that they stuck a piece of iorn on the case. I think they even engraved the company’s initials on it. It was just a little round flat disc , but with the monogram or icon, maybe it looked like something else. It may have had a serial number stamped on it also and recorded with the owners name. I suppose if if the owner lost it and it was found by someone else, maybe it could be traced if records of purchase were kept. Keep in mind I am just supposing> But…if the disc was in fact part of the compensation and it fell of without notice while you were taking some bearings…well that’s another story.. Maybe that company was in Missouri..I am not even sure I read about this..us old folks have bad memorys..I can still use a movie camera though if I need to. Its late so I will finish the line tomorrow.
Today is Saturday. I have been doing yard work most of the day. Well..what else can we say? Eli did not file for his patton…Helen did not copyright her story…Oh, here is a goodie..Seems like someone had a bad road that led to their place. Too much for him to fix so he asked the good old government for help. First thing that comes to my mind is why would a fellow move so far out from everyone else so he would have room to maybe farm a little or just wanted a bit of privacy and then want to improve the road so the city folk could come around. I saw a movie once where a fellow did settle way out from the rest but he knew something. He discovered water on the land and knew the railroad was coming in his direction sooner or later. Older trains needed water you know. He was planning a depot. Buford did also. He also knew the railroad was coming. Look at some old maps and you will see how close the proposed railroad was to his place. Trains don’t stop at a place just because you build a depot unless it is a waterstop. Trains run on rails for revenue, recreation and recurring business. The farmers in the area could ship or receive goods. I think we need something else. Buford had a hotel. Maybe he figured folks would come down to his restaurant.
Maybe he had good homemade food and drink..especially drink. It’s a funny thing about some folks and their drinking habits. Some will shy away from hard liquor, but will drink a glass of ale or beer. Now if that ale had a kick caused by the addition of fruit in the brewing process…oh mercy..I am only drinking beer to quench my thirst..sure. Lets get back to the road.
Just because you want the government to improve your road is a dog that’s not going to hunt unless you have something else going. Government says there are not enough residences and until the population out there in the suburbs increases to ….lets say 1000…we cannot justify your request for any road improvements. Buford is stuck with all his assets. Must be another way to attract folks. Are you starting to see where I am going with this. I know of no exact record, but I’ll bet you a silver dollar we can bring
very special author into the picture at this point. Think what happened when gold was discovered in the west. Granted a few got rich, but it was the hotel, bar, and store owners who really made their fortunes.
All Buford needed was to bait those in the city who for some reason could not go out west but would surely travel a short distance for a chance a gold..gold..gold..mine,mine its all mine..
Much more, but remember I am only working with copied, and as carefully compared
One last note..I am familiar with hilo nehi and pepsi but there seems to be a second code that I am
touching on and it is confusing me. More work ahead…Idaho..sauerkraut an trout sounds ok us stupid rednecks need to try that..of course the reason for all this just THEORY Ckid
