Well...this is another tricky one...asking the FWC to "manage" our deer population is a proposition I'm not very comfortable with...personally.

I've always contended that the FWC "may" have some good data on some of the smaller, access controlled areas, but it's my opinion that they do NOT HAVE A CLUE what is really going on in the entire state.

Our "problems" will not be solved by setting some arbitrary numbers for bag limits or horn sizes throughout the state without a complete statewide audit ($$$).

In order to track the number of kills per person, the FWC would have to implement a STATE WIDE NETWORK database, with information from ALL counties at a cost that would be astronomical..laws would have to be rewritten and an infrastructure to support the enforcement effort....($$$$$$$)

My opinion was more than reinforced this past week....There are two check stations on the WMA I hunt (35,000 acres / uncontrolled access). First thing, I have NEVER been asked for a License or Permits when checking a deer at the WMA...not once in 8 years! For the past two years, these check stations have not received tags or even scales. According to the attendant at one station, they were told to "guess the weight". I cannot believe that this is the ONLY WMA to have these types of issues. Also, there is no attempt to "age" the deer so the FWC has no clue if the deer is a young 8-point or one that was on his last leg!

Maybe I'm wrong, but weight and approximate age, tracked over an extended period of time along with accurate harvest number should be able to tell you allot about the population....but who knows...I'm just a dumb ol' Lake County boy! :)

Now...I'm sure the cost of doing business may drive such behavior from the FWC which is totally understandable...everyone has a budget. However, I just don't want the FWC to make decisions based on majorly flawed, no-existant or fabricated data.

With that said, the WMA I hunt allows you to kill 2 Deer per day with a possession limit of 4. Does that mean if I kill 4, I cannot kill another one until I've eaten or given away one of the first 4????? Is the possession limit telling me I can only kill 4 deer per season????? Not really sure.
