Michael saw Walter slam the gun into the cage before pulling the gate down from overhead with a loud clang. Anyone nearby knew that Walter was irritated and it was no secret that he had been that way for several days.

Since Nikita was brought in from the war with Red Square.

“Stay away you rat,” Walter snarled as he spotted Michael lurking in the shadows. Michael held the pad and walked into the munitions area. “I have the inventory for the next mission.”

“Along with another letter dismissing my suggestion that Nikita should be trained in munitions with me?” Walter snarled as he shook his head and refused to take that pad. “I’m short staffed. You might have to wait for that.”

“You are always short staffed because you don’t get along with anyone.”

“More of the reason why Nikita should be trained with me. She has a talent with the guns.”

“She is more effective out in the field,” Michael replied.

“Yeah, sure… I’m sure that the nurses agree with you there,” Walter shook his head back and forth. “You left her in medical. You… rat.”

Michael had it with the term but he knew better than to lecture Walter about it. He knew that it got out that Nikita had been tortured with rats and it was clear that most hated the fact that Michael allowed her to be manipulated in this way. Michael also knew that Walter had to understand that he was under pressure to do the right thing and there was no way that Madeline or Operations would agree to allow an operative like Nikita, even though they had concerns about her, become a munitions operative. That wasn’t why Nikita was recruited.

“How is she doing?” Michael inquired and Walter twirled around. That was when Michael pushed the pad into Walter’s hand and tilted his head to the side. “I got the inventory to you early, Walter.”

Walter softened as he saw that this was Michael’s way of finding a reason to be there. It also was giving the young man a reason to talk to Walter. It was an opening to ask about Nikita. “You are her trainer. It wouldn’t be deemed incorrect or be a black mark in your book if you went and saw her.”

“I highly doubt that she wants to see me,” Michael spoke as he picked up a gun as an operative walked passed them. Michael popped the clip out and then easily slipped it back in without using his other hand. “How is she?”

“I’ve never seen Madeline or the old monster standing on top of the cliff up there push a rookie operative so much,” Walter grumbled as he shook his head. “Do you know that they want to send her out tonight? For eye candy.”

“I’m not on that mission,” Michael placed the gun down but Walter could see that Michael was aware of it. “So she must have gotten some sleep.”

“Yeah,” Walter jerked his head up and down. “She is tough… but the tough crack, Michael. She isn’t hard like you… there is a really fragile person in there… and everyone is making a mistake to think that you could make her lose that.”

“Don’t think that nothing impacts me, Walter. You just don’t see it,” Michael turned away as he was sure that Nikita may be the only person who may have seen flickers of what wasn’t the operative that Section One needed him to be. He swallowed hard as his phone rang, Elena calling him. He didn’t want to deal with that right. He wanted to go to Nikita’s apartment and be sure that she was ready for being back in the field, but instead, he was going to have to stay in the shadows. “Hi Elena… I miss you so much….”

It had been ok to leave Walter in charge when Michael had gone to the hotel across the street about fourteen hours ago. Michael had heard the reasoning that Walter had given him and when he settled on the bed, Michael realized simply how bone tired he was. He barely had gotten his boots off before falling asleep.

But it was while Michael was in the shower, that he started to feel that he had been gone too long. He glanced at the clock as he walked out of the steamy bathroom and saw that it was almost nine in the morning. That was when his cell phone and the hotel room phone started to ring at the same time.

Walter was in one ear reporting that Nikita was in the process of verbally assaulting every single medical personnel that walked into the room. He said that she had woken up in a bad mood, he was sure that she was more scared about things that she forgot, and lashed out. He said in many ways it reminded him of how Nikita was when she was first brought into Section One, but she remembered some things.

Before Michael had gotten done with Walter, he heard on the other line that things had gone well last night. They had coaxed Nikita to stand for almost a minute beside her bed before she went to sleep last night. They reported that it had appeared to lift her mood. Of course, Michael knew this because when he woke up at three in the morning, he had called Walter for a report, which Walter, sleepily had told him the good news.

As the elevator opened up, Michael could feel the tension in the air and then he heard the tears. He walked down the hallway to see Walter with the one nurse. “You heard what Dr. Carle told us for days… she is scared and lashing out.”

Michael was shocked to see Allison lift her head and look directly at him. She pointed her finger at him. “You shouldn’t have left.”

Michael felt the guilt wash over him. This was exactly what he had feared.

“He needed to rest. I don’t think he would have been able to stop her this morning,” Walter defended Michael’s decision because Walter could see that Michael looked better and that was necessary.

“Then someone should just let her eat some freaking French toast!” Allison hissed as she looked at Michael and shook her head. “I don’t believe she was ever a nurse… no way.”

“She is having issues remembering things, Allison,” Michael exhaled as he stopped to console the nurse who had been there for Nikita. “I can’t imagine what she said.”

“I’ll have nightmares,” Allison shook her head from side to side. “I need out of here…” Allison pushed past and Walter went to go after her but Michael stopped him. “I take it was more than foul…”

“Profanity-laced horror,” Walter looked to the ground and cleared his throat. “I think that she had a dream of the war… she gave pretty graphic example of how she could torture Allison with rats eating her flesh.”

Michael closed his eyes. He found it ironic that he had just thought about that time period and he exhaled. “Or she woke up thinking…”

“Oh no,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “She remembered most things so she isn’t back that many years ago. I say nightmare.”

Michael rubbed his hand over his face and looked around the hallway. “I take it that Allison wasn’t the only one around?”

“Dr. Carle had just walked out. But Amy was there too… I don’t know where she disappeared too,” Walter started to walk with Michael. “What are you going to do?”

Michael shoved his hands into his pockets. “Order a cheese pizza… I don’t care what Dr. Carle says… Nikita won’t be happy with any French toast that she can get out… that is something… she’ll have to wait for…”

“You cooked her French toast…”

“Pizza will have to do,” Michael interrupted Walter as he turned and stopped Walter where he was. “And get in contact with Mick and Birkoff. I have them working on a house… I know that Nikita is really not ready to leave… but this isn’t the right place… and we can’t stay here much longer. It’s breaking her.”

“I still don’t know how she became a nurse,” Walter muttered as he stepped back and knew that by Michael’s actions that he wanted everyone to stay away until he told them to come closer.

Taking several deep breathes; Michael told himself that he couldn’t be upset with Nikita for what he had just seen. He felt bad for Allison because he knew that Nikita would have lashed out at whoever was there. Walter was anticipating it and he had seen it that bad before. But after weeks and weeks of working with a patient who most anticipated would never wake up, it was clear that the women weren’t expecting what had happened, even after being warned.

Michael opened up the door and glanced up at the bed. He felt his heart starting to race as his eyes processed that the bed was empty. He took long strides to open up the door into Nikita’s room to find her sprawled out on the floor, crying heavily. “Kita…”

“Don’t touch me!” Nikita recoiled from him as she tried to push her body up with her arms, but couldn’t muster anything. “Just leave me alone.”

“I’m not going to do that,” Michael declared as he settled on the floor and reached for her, not allowing Nikita’s pity for herself make his decisions for him. He pulled Nikita so that she was settled on his lap. He noted that there were no further protests and Nikita just cried. “You can’t try to go to the bathroom on your own.”

“But it gets me out of here… and the people watching me… and being… like this…” Nikita hiccupped and Michael soothed her hair back. “You know that you weren’t ready for this, Kita…”

“I wanted to be.”

“But you knew,” Michael whispered as he dropped his head to kiss her forehead. “I know that you aren’t used to being taken care of… it won’t be much longer… but you have to give it time… and you can’t make decisions like this…”

Nikita moved her mouth, like she had something to say, but she was thinking too much. So much was storming in her head and Michael kissed her forehead again. “Just rest, Kita… I’m here now… and we can stay here… for a bit…”

It was ok to let Nikita to continue to cry for a bit longer.
