“Robbie, you are so funny,” Lisa declared as she looked up at the hazel eyes of the junior that had taken an interest in her. She hadn’t been asked out on a one-on-one date yet, but she knew that Robbie would be at the popular hangout after the football game on Friday and she would be there too.

“I’ll be your own personal Seinfeld,” Robbie leaned in and nudged his shoulder against Lisa. She blushed and was about to say something more about the project that she had to work on with Robbie when his friends from the football team called out for him. In a flash, he was gone down the hallway.

“Girl, you are being played,” Gretchen, Lisa’s new best friend, declared as she opened her locker next to Lisa’s. She pulled at her very curly red hair and shoved in some books. “He just wants you to do all the school work.”

“We have a lot in common,” Lisa announced and Gretchen snorted. “Yeah… sure… you are just blinded by the letterman jacket and the fact that he has pretty hazel eyes.”

“I am not!” Lisa protested as she shifted her book bag on her shoulder, hating the possibility that Gretchen was right.

Gretchen grew silent and Lisa turned to try to figure out what had brought the loud and boisterous girl to silence. Lisa saw a lot of people in the hallway and even saw Adam glancing towards her. She felt a pang of regret and shook it away. “What is it Gretchen?”

“Man, he has the best green eyes… they just sparkle… yummy…” Gretchen sighed as she turned back to look at her locker. “I can’t believe someone that yummy, is just a freshman.”

“Who are you talking about?” Lisa inquired and Gretchen turned to look at Lisa. “You know… Adam Pomeroy.”

“Adam?” Lisa inquired as she shook her head. “He is a freshman…”

“But have you seen his eyes?”

“Ah…” Lisa shrugged her shoulders as she didn’t want to be talking about Adam right now. “We are sophomores…”

“Oh, there are some things in life that I’d be willing to give up to spend some time with him… he looked so innocent when we first started… but I saw him at soccer practice the other day…”

“Soccer?” Lisa inquired as she didn’t know that. Gretchen nodded her head. “He had his shirt off… the boy is ripped… and did you hear that he is a starter? In this school, it’s huge that a freshman is so good that he took a position that a senior normally has…”

“He is a nerd,” Lisa commented and Gretchen shook her head. “I don’t care if that’s what those football players think… there is something about him…”

“It’s just Adam,” Lisa stated again as she wasn’t sure if she liked the way that Gretchen was gushing about him. “And you know this school… Gary has a crush on you, Gretchen. He is a senior. You can’t think of a freshman over that senior. He is a tight end, Gretchen.”

“But he doesn’t seem to have the soul in him…” Gretchen shook her head and then blinked her eyes. “But you are right… this isn’t the year to go after yummy candy… I can’t imagine that a year won’t make that boy even more desirable.”

“Gretchen. It’s just Adam. We have class with him.”

“I know… it’s going to make it hard not to flirt with him,” Gretchen declared as she shoved her locker closed. “Ready to go to lunch?”

“Ah... yeah,” Lisa agreed as she started to move with her friend. She watched the way that Gretchen kept glancing at Adam as they passed him the hallway. Lisa slapped her friend slightly. “You are going to give him a complex if you don’t stop staring at him.”

“You live near him… what do you know about him?” Gretchen questioned. Lisa shrugged her shoulders. She didn’t feel comfortable telling her friend about how she spent so much time with Adam this summer. She would never get Gretchen to talk about anything else. “I don’t really know him that well. Just in passing.”

“Maybe you can get closer to him… find out what he likes… so when Gary has graduated…”

Lisa rolled her eyes and shook her head. “I won’t lead him on for you, Gretchen.”

“You could have fun with him,” Gretchen chuckled as she pushed the door open to the busy cafeteria. They stood there and a couple of the football players pointed at them until Robbie turned around to wink at Lisa. He motioned with his head for them to come join them in the table. Lisa smiled at Gretchen. “I think… this will make you stop talking about Adam.”
