Adam stepped off the bus from the away game that sealed their place in the playoffs and stopped when he heard someone calling out his name. He turned his head to see a friend of Lisa’s heading towards him. “Ah… hi.”
“Hi Adam,” the girl spoke as she placed her book bag and smiled at him. “I heard you scored the winning goal.”
“Ah… yeah,” Adam nodded his head as he tried to remember who this was. Then he remembered her name. “What are you doing here, Gretchen?”
“I was hoping that you wouldn’t mind taking me on some of those trails that you showed Lisa this summer,” Gretchen spoke as she didn’t even pay attention to the other members of the soccer team running away from the bus.
Adam rubbed his forehead and tilted his head to the side. “Ah… I didn’t know that you liked to hike, Gretchen.”
“I thought it would be something new to do…. And high school is about doing new things,” Gretchen spoke and Adam nodded his head. He didn’t know much about Gretchen but he thought it was a good sign that Lisa had obviously told her about their hikes. “I don’t have plans this weekend. Sunday is to be nice. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow.”
“Hey, Pomeroy… they want to lock up the school. Clear your locker out!” the coach called out. Adam touched Gretchen’s hand. “I have to go in…”
“I can wait,” Gretchen spoke and Adam nodded his head while he almost stumbled over his feet while heading towards the school.
Adam turned the corner and Rusty, his one friend on the team, who was a sophomore, was standing there grinning. “What?”
“Gretchen Hanlon… great score,” Rusty spoke and Adam shook his head. “She wants to go on a hike.”
“Do you know that there are going to be upperclassmen that will be filled with envy,” Rusty leaned against the closed locker as Adam opened up his.
“A hike, dude,” Adam corrected and Rusty shook his head. “You are naïve with the ladies… and I don’t know how… because they think you are hot.”
Adam rolled his eyes and he pulled out his things from the locker while continuing to shake his head from side to side. “I’m not allowed to date.”
“Then a hike is a good thing to call it,” Rusty slapped the locker door. “Although… I think your dad would approve of that girl. She is yummy.”
“And just what I need… more reason for guys like Robbie to hate me,” Adam groaned as he picked up his book bag and swung it onto his shoulder.
Rusty shook his head. “Robbie is happy now that he had Lisa in his arms… and I heard that she is doing some homework for him… so he is out of torturing boys like you.”
Rusty left before Adam could counter. He knew that bringing up Lisa was a sore spot, although both said that they were nothing more than friends. Rusty didn’t believe that statement for one moment. He had classes with both Adam and Lisa and knew that there was a lot more than friends.
Adam didn’t linger in the locker room as he didn’t want the coach to rush him to do things twice in one day. He may have won the game for the team, but he still didn’t feel like he completely fit in with the group. During practice there were many times that he felt that the upperclassmen were trying to go over him and being the hero of the game didn’t make him feel any better. One teammate had even suggested that Adam should have passed the ball to a senior instead of going for the goal.
The senior should have been the hero.
Walking out of the school, Adam was about to head towards his house when he heard that voice calling out his name again. He turned to see Gretchen jogging towards him. “I went and got you some Gatorade… I thought you might need it for the walk home.”
“You didn’t need to do that, Gretchen,” Adam accepted the bottle and opened it while Gretchen stood there, watching him. Adam sighed and looked around. “Ok… so you want to take a hike.”
“Sunday would be perfect,” Gretchen nodded her head up and down. “And…”
“There is an and here?” Adam asked and Gretchen blushed. “Yeah… see… I’m not that good with French… and I heard that you tested out.”
“I did,” Adam nodded his head up and down. “My dad is French… he spoke in French a lot to me…”
“Could you help me get my grade up too?” Gretchen inquired and Adam leaned his head back. “Is that the reason why you want to go on a hike?”
“I want to have fun on Sunday… and address my grade before my parents find out,” Gretchen explained as she stood there, staring at Adam. Adam groaned. “I’ve never helped a classmate…”
“But you tutored the elementary school kids…”
Adam rolled his eyes. “Lisa told you about that?”
“Yeah,” Gretchen nodded her head up and down. “She said you liked it… even when you weren’t punished any longer…”
“I couldn’t just leave them that close to the end of the school year,” Adam explained as he looked back at Gretchen. “Ok… I’ll do it… but I can’t tell you that I will be any good at it. I’m not a teacher.”
“I’m sure that anything that you can do to help me will make a big difference,” Gretchen beamed back as she handed him a piece of paper. “My cell phone number… and my email address.”
“We can study at my house after the hike. The one trail basically ends near my backyard and it’s a good beginner trail,” Adam explained his thoughts of the plan. “I hope you have some good boots.”
“I’m going to shopping tonight,” Gretchen grinned and Adam nodded his head. He shoved the paper into his pocket and stepped away. “I’ll email you a good time… I have to make sure that I don’t need to do anything with my family.”
“I’ll see you on Sunday, hero,” Gretchen commented and Adam continued down the street. Gretchen loved watching his body as he left and she pulled out her cell phone and called quickly to Lisa. “Hey… I need to go buy some hiking boots tonight. Do you have plans to go to the mall tonight?”
