“Mommy… I was just being the Macropus giganteus… but now I’m going to be the Pongo pygmaeus… Did you know that it lives in Borneo?” Sabina bounced towards her mother and stopped her impersonation of the kangaroo and dropped to the floor onto her back before bouncing back to her feet.
Nikita tried to remember what animal the Pongo pygmaeus was but quickly remembered that it was the orangutan when Sabina ran out of the room with her arms flailing in every direction.
It was hard not to be tired. Nikita just chuckled at her daughter as she disappeared into the other room of the studio.
The zoo had been a lot harder than Nikita expected. First, they couldn’t be as fast with Sabina. She wanted to read every sing, which clearly she remembered exactly all the details. She also wanted to study the animals and if the animals weren’t moving, she wanted to wait for some sign of them moving. For most, it didn’t take long, but to wait for a Komodo dragon to move or the sloth to move, one had to distract Sabina.
All of this took away from the photo shoot, but Nikita did get the photos done. But they had to eat the zoo and now were running several hours behind where they wanted to be right now. Shopping for the wedding dress.
“This Pongo pygmaeus makes me tired, Mommy,” Sabina declared as she stood in the doorway. Nikita turned her head away from the computer where she was backing up her images to chuckle at her daughter. “Maybe the orangutan needs to take a nap until Reagan gets here.”
“Reagan should have come to the zoo with us today. She could be a Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi while I leap around like an Antidorcas marsupialis,” Sabina smiled back at her mom. Nikita was almost sure that Sabina realized that she didn’t know exactly what animals that she was talking about. Nikita knew the first was the Giraffe.
“When you are in school with your new friends… are you going to call these animals by these names?” Nikita inquired as she leaned back in the chair a bit and hoped that this was something that Sabina had remembered from the day. It was Michael who immediately started to ask Sabina what were the names of the animals that she was going to tell others about. He told her that it was ok for her to call the animals by their technical types with the family but with friends and others she should use the names they all should know.
“A giraffe and a springbok,” Sabina nodded her head up and down. She tilted her head and winked. “I know what I’m supposed to call them.”
“A springbok? What’s a springbok?” Reagan asked as she walked into the studio with a smile on her face. Nikita watched as Sabina studied the woman. “You know what a springbok is! You told me about them yesterday.”
“I watched you on the zoo website,” Reagan stated and Nikita rolled her eyes. “Is Michael out there?”
“Pacing the sidewalk… I guess the zoo took longer…” Reagan inquired and Nikita nodded her head. She knew that Michael was trying to pull strings so that they could go look at dresses today, but she had already told Michael to just reschedule. There were plenty of other days and they were the ones that were hours late.
Nikita glanced at the computer, seeing the last of the photos had copied over. With her first version of the plan, she was going to get thru a quick edit of the pictures to delete the ones that weren’t good, but she was tired now and wanted to go.
“I have to tell you, Mick annoys me,” Reagan commented as she leaned casually against the wall. Nikita heard the one and it didn’t match with what was being said. “I think you like him… and he is going to forever call you Jujubes.”
“That’s annoying too,” Reagan declared and Nikita shook her head as she turned off the computer. “I think you find him funny… and he might be charming.”
“I’ll admit that he has some good ideas for the space.”
“That you are going to live in,” Nikita outlined and Reagan started to nod her head up and down. “Once I saw some of the drawings…”
“Mick had drawings already?”
“You were running late,” Reagan pointed out as Nikita stood up. She heard Sabina out there and glanced to see that she was using the window of the gallery to pretend that she was in an aquarium for her father that was still on the phone outside. “Sabina… what are you doing?”
“I’m being the leafy seahorse… the Phycodurus eques,” Sabina answered without looking at her mother.
“And I see the wisdom of having some space from your daughter,” Reagan shrugged her shoulders. Nikita smirked and nodded her head. She didn’t say anything more, but there was no way that Reagan felt that Mick was annoying if he spent that much time with her today. He said he had only an hour at the most to spend with her, so something mutual must have been going on.
“Come on, Sabina… how about we stop at the park on the way home?” Reagan called out while Michael was opening the door. He smiled and kissed Sabina as Reagan picked the big girl up in her arms with ease. Reagan was going to have to stop that, but for now Nikita sighed with some relief that her over-energized daughter had left.
Nikita walked to the wall and turned the lights off. “Let’s get out of here… and maybe have some time at the house before they get home,” Nikita spoke as she picked up her purse.
“We have plans.”
“Had plans, Michael. We are hours late. That boutique closes early on Saturday,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “Next weekend.”
“They are staying open for us,” Michael shrugged his shoulders slightly. Nikita stopped and shook her head. “Michael… we didn’t need this.”
“Well, we had plans.”
“And you paid them to stay open? How much, Michael?” Nikita inquired and Michael chuckled. “They know you… and how you broke down when there with Beatrice and Rhoda… they won’t even let me pay them.”
“Oh,” Nikita chilled slightly. She had already figured that this was not going to happen today, not that she had planned for things to go this way.
“Yes... oh. You are getting a wedding dress today, Kita.”
