Adam had asked from the moment that he arrived at the hospital to see Nikita and to be allowed to go home. Finally, after what felt like a whole day to Adam, Nikita entered the room.

Along with his father.

Nikita moved towards him right away and then stopped, afraid to get too close. Adam looked at his father and then turned away. “I’m sorry… Dad…”

“Adam,” Michael spoke gently as he looked at the door that had closed behind him. “All that matter is that you are ok, son.”

Nikita nodded her head but she didn’t speak. Adam looked at her and shifted in the bed. “I’m fine, Nikita. I didn’t even want to be brought here. I just wanted to go home.”

Adam then looked back at his father. “I know… I shouldn’t have let them do this, Dad… but I had to get Gretchen out of the way… and there were too many of them… and I’m to play it safe… and if I was able to handle that crowd… being outnumbered like that…”

“Adam,” Michael spoke sharply to stop Adam’s rattling. “It’s fine. I don’t like it… but I only care that you are ok.”

“And I am… and I’m ready to go home,” Adam spoke and Nikita was shaking her head. But she her hands to her face while not speaking. She didn’t believe that Adam was ok and Adam groaned. “Look… Ellie already put me through a whole bunch of tests… for no reason…”

“Have you seen yourself?” Michael asked as he stood there and looked at the battered face of his son.

Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I didn’t say that I don’t have any pain… but not enough to be here.”

The door opened and Ellie walked in. “I hope that your son isn’t trying to talk you into going home.”

“He isn’t,” Michael announced as he got closer to Nikita and placed his hands on her arms. Ellie tapped the chart and shook her head at Adam slightly. “You have to stay overnight, Adam.”

“No,” Adam protested as he shifted in the bed and groaned in pain. Ellie nodded her head up and down. “You have a concussion, Adam… and a cracked rib… You are actually very lucky for the beating that you took.”

“That I should have never allowed that to happen,” Adam shook his head slightly and looked at his dad. “Come on, Dad… this concussion can’t be anything like Nikita’s… and she didn’t stay in that long.”

“Concussions… are… bad,” Nikita spoke finally and Ellie nodded her head. “Come on, Adam… I still need to get a scan on that leg of yours because it looks like someone tried to kick a field goal with it and I just want to be sure that it is in one piece…”

“And you did nothing wrong, Adam,” Michael spoke as he moved to the railing and moved closer. “You would have protected yourself if it got dangerous… but I taught you those things… in case… you know… more dangerous people got you… not the school yard bully… or bullies.”

“And you aren’t clear to go home,” Ellie announced as she got closer to Adam. He closed his eyes and looked at Nikita who now touched at Michael’s shoulder to get him to back up. “It doesn’t hurt that much.”

“Then you try to get up and you throw up,” Nikita bluntly declared as she shook her head. “I was so scared, Adam… let us all be scared here for a bit longer… because I don’t know if I could handle you getting sick at home because we brought you home too soon.”

Nikita shoved her hands into her pockets and swallowed as she stepped back. “I have to call your friends… ah Gretchen and Blake stopped… and I told them that I would call.”

Getting into the hallway, Nikita felt the ability to breathe again, but as she pulled out that paper, she felt a flip of her stomach. She could see Gretchen talking about the Angel and Nikita didn’t realize that she had leaned against the wall and closed her eyes.

“Kita?” Michael asked as he stepped in front of her. Nikita lifted her head and blinked her eyes. “Michael… you should stay with Adam.”

“You’ve been gone for over ten minutes,” Michael pointed out and Nikita rubbed at her neck. “Oh… I just…”

Michael walked away from Adam’s room and pulled Nikita into a small alcove. “Adam said that Gretchen talks a lot about the Angel.”

“She is mad with me… and she doesn’t know that it is me,” Nikita gasped as she turned her head away. “She wanted to know why the Angel wasn’t there to stop this… and I keep on wondering why I wasn’t there…”

Michael wrapped his arms around Nikita as she allowed the tears to fall against his shirt. He rocked gently back and forth on his feet to comfort Nikita. “Kita… Adam is going to be fine… there is nothing that you could have done…”

It was a while later that Michael pulled back. “Did you have a flash?”

“I don’t think so,” Nikita shook her head back and forth. “I just… needed… space.”

“Ok,” Michael nodded his head as he stroked Nikita’s face. “Why don’t we let one of the nurses call the friends… and you help me talk Adam into staying.”

Nikita frowned. “There is no talking Adam into staying. You are his father and you have the final say.”

“We are his parents,” Michael took Nikita’s hand and squeezed it. “We’ll do this together.”
