Adam was awake and he couldn’t fall back to sleep on this Thanksgiving morning. He was kind of upset that he had woken up as early as he could sleep in. He sat up in bed and was trying to figure out if he wanted to go downstairs yet when there was a soft knock on the door. “Can I come in?” Nikita’s voice was gentle and soft.

“Yeah…” Adam replied and the door opened. Nikita smiled gently as she had an apron half on and tied at the waste. “I thought you’d like to come down and watch the parade.”

Adam was sure that Sabina was downstairs, bouncing off of the walls with excitement. While he enjoyed watching the parade last year with Nikita, he was sure that it was going to be a different experience today.

“Sabina is with Reagan… they slept over in the construction zone as an adventure… I believe they were up really late last night,” Nikita included as Adam was mulling over his response. He blinked his eyes and Nikita smiled at him. “I thought we needed some time without Sabina around. She is probably not going to be over right away…but don’t expect to be without her the entire morning and parade.”

“You planned this? For me?”Adam inquired and Nikita moved to the edge of the bed and nodded her head. “You’ve been thru a lot, Adam. It’s the least I could do for you and me to have some time alone.”

Adam turned his head to the side and then looked back at Nikita. “My dad suggested this?”

“Nope,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She couldn’t believe that Adam was not out of bed and heading downstairs yet. But she also knew that it had been a long year for him too. “I had to get up and make the turkey… so I made that granola that you like for us to eat for breakfast.”

“Which granola?” Adam inquired and Nikita knew that he was just being a pain in the butt right now to pull her chain. She was willing to go along with this as she knew that he was smiling slightly and enjoying the attention.

“The Alton Brown granola… with a bunch of extra cashews… and lots of extra toasted coconut… and maybe even some dried pineapple is mixed with it now as it is just cooling off,” Nikita outlined the recipe that she had followed slowly, watching as Adam couldn’t help himself but lick his lips. “It’s still going to be warm. I know that is when you like it the most.”

“Yeah,” Adam nodded his head up and down. “Ok… I’ll come down…”

Nikita found herself on the couch, underneath the large blanket, eating a large bowl of granola with Adam not long later, the parade just about to start. She looked at Adam and he looked at her. “Why did you make this so early? I thought we weren’t eating until after two this afternoon.”

“It’s a big turkey,” Nikita chuckled as she leaned her head back against the couch, happy to have this time with Adam.

“I don’t know why everyone has to come over here,” Adam grumbled and Nikita nodded her head. “If they weren’t, we’d only have turkey… everyone else is making parts of the dinner, Adam.”

“But everyone?” Adam questioned as he shook his head. “It’s too many people.”

“Or is it Lisa that you don’t want here?” Nikita asked Adam as she had a long discussion about this with Rhoda just yesterday. Lisa didn’t want to come over either and all the adults knew that it was something to do with Lisa’s relationship with Robbie. “Is this still about Robbie? Because you told me that you are tutoring him now…”

“Come on, Kita… I don’t want to talk about this,” Adam shook his head from side to side.

“It isn’t like you were dating, Lisa. I think you should just make up… and you have Gretchen… and Lisa isn’t dating Robbie any longer,” Nikita spoke after a while of watching the television with Adam. He popped some more granola into his mouth and pointed towards the screen. “Look… there is balloon damage…”

Nikita nodded her head as she saw the slight deflation of the balloon. “Looks like it isn’t that much damage… probably just like you and Lisa… it can easily be fixed.”

“It’s getting windy there…. The balloon handlers are starting to fight with the balloons…” Adam ignored Nikita as he leaned his head forward to study the television. “I know that it sounds mean… but I love when the weather takes control of the parade… much more fun.”

“Adam…” Nikita whispered and he turned his head. “I’ll behave myself during dinner. But you can’t make me be her friend.”

It was not going to do Nikita any good to continue to push Adam about this. She knew this and she didn’t want to ruin this morning because Nikita had not intended it to be about fixing the friendship between Adam and Lisa. She just wanted some time to spend with Adam as she was sure that she had been spending more with Sabina.

Michael came downstairs to find Nikita and Adam laughing on the couch as the parade was going on. He didn’t understand why the two of them delighted in damaged balloons, but it did get them something to do each year. He had wondered if Nikita would do this and he was pleasantly pleased to know that she had done this. He leaned against the doorframe and knew how well Nikita had done of late. She had handled a difficult situation with their daughter as she came dressed up with what she thought was a ninja warrior and had calmed Michael down when she had told him about Adam agreeing to tutor Robbie, the boy who had badly beaten him up.

Today was going to be another day that Nikita had a lot to do. Tomorrow Michael was going to properly thank her for her good work.
