“Hi Nat…. Rhoda is in the kitchen. We just finished dinner,” Lisa spoke as she was just about to walk upstairs as Nat walked into the house. She saw how tired he was and she stopped. “I hate that they made you work on Sunday.”
“And Saturday,” Nat rasped as he shrugged his shoulders. “It comes with the job, Lisa.”
Lisa frowned. “But we were to go to the movies.”
“I told Rhoda to take you,” Nat groaned as he shook his head. He hated that Rhoda hadn’t followed thru with their plans.
“I didn’t want to go without you…. You like the action movies… not Rhoda,” Lisa shrugged her shoulders as she trotted upstairs, not giving Nat the opportunity that the movie that they were going to see was one that she would have had more fun seeing with Adam. Nat rolled his shoulders back as he pulled his coat off, knowing that he had other things to worry about.
He entered the kitchen to see that Rhoda had just finished the dishes and she had just slipped a plate into the microwave. He wrapped his arms around her and took a deep inhale, relieved to be home, even though he felt guilty leaving the other men behind. “Sorry…”
“I’m ok with things…” Rhoda turned in her arms and touched his face. “I’m just worried about you. You look tired.”
“Yeah,” Nat nodded his head up and down. “You didn’t try to get in touch with Michael or Nikita, right? You let them have their weekend, right?”
“Yes,” Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “It isn’t their job either.”
Nat sat down and nodded his head. He knew that Michael and Nikita were trying hard to find out who was behind the bad things. “It’s frustrating, Rhoda. I know that the latest thing that was credited to the Angel wasn’t the Angel… and that Devil… he hit like I knew that he would… the others in the department finally believe what I’ve been seeing… and it won’t be long until the media catch on.”
Rhoda blinked her eyes and tilted her head to the side. “Are you sure that it is the same person? I mean, the Devil… we know when it is the Angel.”
“And it hasn’t been the Angel,” Nat huffed as he shook his head. “The damn media just has everything that is good in the world… being the Angel… and the people who are doing the good deeds found it easier to let it be the Angel.”
Rhoda waited and raised an eyebrow. Nat sighed heavily. “Davenport was looking at crime scene photos… he noticed the signature… a very small graffiti mark… we know that it is the work of the same person… or group of people.”
Rhoda moved towards Nat and rubbed his shoulders. “It’s not like the police are going to release that information.”
“Hell, most of them aren’t even sure if they believe me on that mark… until today when it was bigger.”
“But it won’t be released to the media.”
“But the media… they are going to put it together. They are smart.”
“They are wrongly identifying the Angel,” Rhoda pointed out. Nat turned and took her hands. “But they had figured out that there was an Angel to start with when Nikita was doing it all on her own.”
Rhoda heard the microwave stop and she retrieved the plate and sat down beside Nat as he looked at the food and looked at her. “I want this to end.”
“So maybe we need to stop people from being the Angel,” Rhoda commented and Nat shook his head. “That would kill Nikita… and all of them. I don’t like that we need people like them… but I don’t want to know what the world would be like without them doing these things. And why stop the good?”
“Because it stops the bad?”
“We need to stop the bad,” Nat rubbed his neck. “And, despite those who don’t believe me… we are starting a task force.”
“They won’t know about the Angel.”
“Never,” Nat rasped as he shook his head to side. “That stays forever with me, Rhoda.”
“So you are part of the task force,” Rhoda commented as she rubbed her hands along the table. She had something else that she wanted to talk to Nat about tonight and she saw that slipping away.
“I’m in charge of the task force,” Nat revealed as he picked up the fork and looked at Rhoda. “I told them all to go home tonight… and on the nights that we can. Until the media figures it out.”
“So… we’ll have to put off…” Rhoda drifted off and shook her head. “Never mind.”
“What?” Nat placed the fork down and took her hand. “What am I forgetting? I’m not going to let this task force ruin the holidays, Rhoda.”
Rhoda stood up and walked to the sink. She stared outside. “We were to do that paperwork.”
“Paperwork?” Nat asked as he was tired and he didn’t know what Rhoda was talking about, but he realized that it was important.”
“Adoption paperwork… to see if we could adopt a baby,” Rhoda turned and looked at Nat. “We talked about it a while ago… you said after Thanksgiving… the weekend after…”
Nat closed his eyes as he hated that he had forgotten this. He swallowed hard and Rhoda looked at Nat again. “We can’t think that Nikita is going to find us another kid… a baby… and Lisa has given us so much to our family, but she is growing up fast.”
“Let me eat dinner,” Nat swallowed hard. Rhoda shook her head. She walked towards him and kissed his forehead. “You need to settle this Devil thing first… your mind and your heart won’t be in this, Nat. I understand that. I can wait.”
Nat watched as Rhoda walked away. He knew that she said it, but he wasn’t sure if she truly was telling the truth. He had been all for adopting another child until Davenport pulled him into his house last week and showed him what he had found. Then the cold reality of that Devil made Nat realize that he had a hard job to do. He wasn’t quite sure if that was fair for a child to be brought into.
