Nikita walked into the house and could hear that it sounded like the kids were upstairs. She held her breathe for a moment and when they didn’t come clamoring down the stairs, she was relieved. Michael came in right behind her and placed a hand on her lower back while closing the door. “Motrin?”
Nikita looked at Michael and he tilted his head to the side. He was so in tune with her body sometimes. Nikita nodded her head and he kissed her cheek to go find the Motrin.
“Hey, Sugar… we just finished up lunch… Reagan saved me from playing tea party again… and Adam is on the computer,” Walter reported as he walked out to the hallway while Michael passed. Nikita had not been concerned about this time leaving Walter with the children.
There would be no kissing going on because Gretchen was away with her family for Thanksgiving.
Nikita glanced at Walter and then shivered. Maybe something had happened.
“Look… Sugar… things were good…”
“What happened?” Nikita inquired firmly as she squared her body to look at him, ignoring the first cramps that she really started to feel.
“It’s nothing bad,” Walter commented as he fidgeted his hands. “And it might not even come up… it’s just… I want you to know that I didn’t say anything to Sabina…”
“About?” Nikita interrupted as Michael walked down the hallway. “What’s going on?”
Nikita took the bottle of Motrin from Michael’s hands and took the dose without the water that he carried in his other hand. “I’m waiting to find out from Walter… apparently something happened with Sabina.”
“We were just talking about Christmas, Sugar,” Walter looked between the couple and he looked at Michael. “I thought it was just important to find out what Sabina wanted for Christmas.”
“So you want to get her something instead of us?” Nikita inquired and Walter shook his head. “No… not at all.”
“Then what?” Michael inquired but there couldn’t be an answer as Sabina was flying down the stairs, calling out for her mom. “Mommy… Mommy… Mommy…”
Nikita grunted as she caught her daughter in her arms and held her up in the air. “Sabina… We were only gone for two days.”
“I need to go see Santa. Today,” Sabina declared as she took her hands and placed them on Nikita’s face. “Because I want to have a baby brother or sister for Christmas and those things take time.”
Nikita knew what Walter was trying to say now. In the past, he had started Sabina on the rant about them being married so he was trying to say that he had nothing to do with what Sabina wanted for Christmas. In fact, looking at Walter as he shook his head from side to side as she held her daughter, she knew that Walter had been trying to talk her out of wanting this for Christmas.
“Sabina, that’s not something that Santa can bring you,” Michael stepped up to take his daughter out of Nikita’s hands as he could tell that she was struggling with this. It was hard enough for her to be open about her feelings about the possibility of another child when they were alone. To have to face it in public, with their young daughter, was not Nikita’s burden alone.
“I know that the baby wouldn’t be here until the summer, Dad,” Sabina rolled her eyes while shaking her head from side to side. “And I know that you have to give Mommy the baby… but it can all happen in time if I talk to Santa today.”
“It’s not that simple, darling,” Michael whispered as he kissed her head. “And don’t you like us spending time with you? A baby would take a lot of time… and it would wake us all up in the middle of the night…and you don’t like thunderstorms because they wake you up…”
“I don’t like thunderstorms because of the lightening, Daddy,” Sabina seriously corrected as she crossed her arms and frowned. “I want a baby brother or sister because I want to be like Adam.”
Nikita looked at Walter and exhaled. “I know that you had nothing to do with this, Walter.”
“Sabina, we talked about this,” Walter tried as he stepped over and touched Sabina’s shoulder. “This is not for Santa to give. This is about if your mother and father want to have another child.”
“They have too much love for all of us… they have plenty for another baby,” Sabina declared as she wiggled in her father’s arms, a sign that had Michael setting her down. Nikita looked at Michael and squatted down to look her daughter in the eyes. “This might be a gift that Santa can’t bring to you. Are you going to be upset with him?”
“He’ll try,” Sabina announced as she smiled. “And you and dad are going to have another baby.”
Nikita rubbed her face and looked up at Michael, almost afraid of what to do now. But Nikita blinked her eyes before looking back at her daughter. “Have you thought of other gifts you might want to have? If all you ask for is a baby brother or sister and you don’t tell Santa anything else… well, you might just get underwear and socks.”
“I did think of other gift options,” Sabina nodded her head. “I typed them up.”
“Maybe you should share those ideas with Walter…. I’m sure that he would like them,” Nikita spoke as she nodded her head up and down before forcing out a large smile. Sabina jumped in response and was soon running upstairs while she yelled out, “I have to print out multiple copies… if Santa can’t get them… others can buy them…”
Michael helped Nikita up and wrapped his arms around Nikita. “She’ll forget about this soon enough.”
Nikita shook her head as she felt her body so much right now. But this wasn’t something that she was going to even think of doing for her daughter, no matter how much she loved her daughter. Yet, it didn’t stop the tears. “She is both of us, Michael. She got stubbornness from both of us.”
“Look, Sugar… I didn’t mean to have this come up… I thought she was going to ask for some sort of Wii game or something that was going to be hard to buy…” Walter frowned as he dropped his head. “I never thought this would be the first thing and only thing… Reagan tried too… and she got Sabina to work on the list too…”
“It’s ok, Walter,” Michael spoke as Nikita put her head down on his shoulder, melting into the hug that he was embracing her in right now. “Thank you for watching them.”
“I feel so bad,” Walter groan and Nikita pulled away and turned in Michael’s arms. “You’ll feel bad… because you are going to have to find half of the stuff that’s on that typed list.”
“I heard its multiple pages,” Walter rasped as he shook his head and then rolled his shoulders back. “Anything… anything at all.”
Nikita rolled her eyes much like Sabina rolled her eye earlier. “Seriously, Walter? You couldn’t tell I was joking?”
“With tears still on your face?” Walter inquired as he shook his head. Sad that this was causing a sad end to the time alone with Michael.
