Ellie walked down the hallway and looked into the living room to see Nikita curled up on the couch. It was almost six in the morning and Ellie rolled her shoulders back as she looked at Nikita. “Are you ok?”

Nikita ignored the question. “How is Mr. DelMonte?”

Ellie frowned and shook her head slightly. “He wants to be called Dick… and he is fine. The bullet was as thru-and-thru…”

“Because Michael got to him,” Nikita spoke as she could remember Michael pushing Mr. DelMonte as she simply wasn’t able to get to the gun before it went off.

“And we know what killed John Belfont… the syringe was empty,” Ellie reported as she sat down on the edge of the chair that was opposite of Nikita, who looked so tired. But now she was confused. “What?”

“No toxin,” Ellie answered as she had to explain because Nikita was drained. “He injected a large air bubble into his blood stream.”

Nikita cringed as she saw the events happening again. After Michael had knocked down Mr. DelMonte and John saw Nikita heading towards him, he tried to set off the bomb, but it didn’t work. But his actions were enough for Nikita to stop and back away. She couldn’t tell how dangerous that bomb was and that was when he whipped out the syringe. “Tonight was his last stand.”

“He was starting to lose the ability to walk,” Ellie nodded her head up and down. “You know what they found in the car…”

“Proof,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. She had talked to Michael when he was leaving the crime scene, which he was able to be at because he was a consultant that the police used, while Nikita had to get out of there before officials arrived. Nat could have covered her being there, so could have Tom, but it wasn’t worth the hassle.

“Nat found some that he hadn’t found,” Nikita rubbed her hands together. “And he just started to process that car... he might find more…”

“Nothing you could have done,” Ellie pointed out as she saw that Nikita was upset about what had happened. Nikita jerked her head back and rubbed at her eyes. “That boy… doesn’t know that he destroyed his family… not only was he going to die... he became a monster… that destroyed that family… his sister, who he was trying to stand up for… is never going to understand what he became.”

“They’ll understand it as his illness,” Ellie attempted to figure an easy way for Nikita to process what she had seen. Ellie had heard descriptions of what happens to a body when it takes in an air bubble into the blood stream, but Nikita got to watch it while she couldn’t do anything about it because of the bomb.

And the bomb was real.

Nikita shifted on the couch and winced, although she hadn’t really done anything. She was still upset that Michael had gone after Mr. DelMonte. That was her thing to do but he wanted to protect Nikita. But she should have been the one to go after him.

“I know that you were with Davenport when things happened… we couldn’t wait, Ellie.”

“I understand that,” Ellie stressed as she forced a half smile. “Davenport… well, I can force him to see it that way once he gets home.”

Nikita’s face lightened some but she didn’t smile. Ellie leaned forward. “Is there anything that I can do for you?”

Nikita pulled her legs closer to her body and shivered slightly. She closed her eyes and could see that syringe and the pain that radiated from that boy’s body. Yes he was evil for killing those people as the Devil, but that wasn’t an image that Nikita was going to get out of her mind for some time. “Something to help me sleep?”

Ellie frowned deeply this time as she stood up and moved to the couch. She pushed back Nikita’s hair and sighed. “That’s not what you need right now.”

“I need to sleep… and I keep seeing…” Nikita rasped as she shook her head as she swallowed past the knot in her throat. “And I worry… if I keep on seeing it… I’ll start having PTSD flashes again… and it’s been such a long time…”

Ellie settled down right next to Nikita. “A drug to help you sleep is not what you need right now.”

Nikita sniffled as she looked at Ellie and rocked slightly. “But I don’t want Sabina to see me like this either… I’d rather be asleep.”

Ellie took Nikita’s hand and squeezed it. “You don’t need the drugs, Nikita.”

Nikita nodded her head as she pulled her legs up closer to her body. “And Sabina will be up soon enough.”

“It’s going to be rough because it’s Saturday,” Ellie nodded her head up and down. “But Reagan is here… and you aren’t alone today.”

Nikita swallowed. “I’m to bake cookie with Sabina again today.”

“She will care more about that than if you are tired this morning… and more than if you have to take a nap,” Ellie pulled away from the couch. “Try to sleep some, please. Michael will be home shortly… maybe you should go upstairs…”

Nikita shook her head tiredly from side to side. “I’m better here… and I will try to sleep. I promise.”

“I’ll lock the door,” Ellie whispered as she reached over and turned off the bright light, leaving Nikita with a soft lamp across the room from her. Ellie hoped that the lack of light would help Nikita fall asleep.

Nikita was alone for a while. She had drifted to sleep a bit and then woke up with a shudder. Then a noise was heard and then Nikita could distinctly tell that someone was walking down the stairs. “Mommy?”

Nikita pulled her head up and sighed. “What are you doing up, Sabina?”

“I couldn’t go back to sleep… I heard all of you down here…” Sabina admitted as she shifted from side to side. “Why are you sleeping down here?”

“Waiting for your father to come home,” Nikita replied as she reached her hands out. “Come here… lay down with me…”

“I can’t sleep here…” Sabina protested gently even as she rubbed her eyes. Sabina was usually full of energy so Nikita was sure that this was another sign that Sabina had spent too much of the previous night up. Nikita wrapped a blanket around herself and her daughter, wrapping her arms around Sabina not too tightly, but rather snuggly.

And that was how Michael found Nikita and Sabina asleep on the couch when he got home – and he wasn’t about to wake either one of them.

Rather, Michael settled down on the floor next to them and drifted to sleep also.
