Nikita pulled the casserole out of the oven with Walter working on the turkey. He didn’t believe in making a big production at the table and he carved the best in the kitchen. Rhoda chuckled as she walked into the kitchen. “I thought you were off KP duty, Nikita.”
“Nah,” Nikita shook her head, feeling a lot better after pulling herself out of Walter’s hug. She looked at Rhoda who was wearing a bright red silk shirt and placed the casserole down on the table. “Did you have a good Christmas?”
“I got the best gift,” Rhoda gushed and Nikita leaned forward. Rhoda laughed. “You’ll think it’s odd… but it was a paper.”
“A paper?” Nikita asked and Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “Nat finally got around to signing the paperwork for getting into the adoption process… that was the only thing I needed this holiday.”
“I’m happy for you,” Nikita smiled brightly as she hugged Rhoda lightly. “I guess he has more time now.”
“Yes,” Rhoda nodded her head up and down. “And more time with Lisa… and it’s been great.”
Nikita sighed and rubbed her lower back. “So… is Lisa sulking in the living room, trying to avoid Adam?”
Rhoda jerked and shook her head. “What?”
“I know that Lisa and Adam are still on the outs…”
“No,” Rhoda interrupted as she shook her head again. “They made up… I guess they started to talk after... well… after the issue was taken care of with that… unfortunate unguided soul…”
Nikita didn’t know this and she looked at Walter. “Did you know this?”
“Nope,” Walter shook his head as he continued to work on the turkey, but found this all to be interesting.
“They even bought gifts for each other,” Rhoda spoke and Nikita pulled the oven mitts off. “I can’t miss this… because I have no idea what is going on.”
“I told you to leave the kitchen a while ago,” Walter grumbled as he smiled while Nikita left. Walter heard laughter in the living room and sighed in relief. He had been worried for Nikita once she had talked. He knew that Nikita was aware that Beatrice was not in the area as she was visiting her family for the holidays. If she would have had a bad PTSD flash or started to get them rapidly, they would all have to pitch in to help Nikita, if she would allow it.
But Walter was also afraid of what Nikita didn’t want to talk about. She wouldn’t say that she didn’t want to another child. He wondered if that was what Nikita wanted truly or if she was simply scared to have another child. But the fact that Nikita wasn’t truly talking about it, wasn’t going to help her.
“You look too pensive for a holiday,” Whitney spoke as she walked into the kitchen. Walter jerked as he took himself out of the thoughts and smiled. “I didn’t know you were coming.”
“I got an earlier flight,” Whitney smiled as she moved into the kitchen. “Can I help with something?”
“You just got in… from Africa?”
“South Africa,” Whitney nodded her head up and down. “Michael wanted me to come in to do engagement photos.”
Walter stepped away from the turkey and looked at the platter; sure that he had carved more than enough of both the white and dark meat. “Does Nikita know?”
“She didn’t know I was coming between the holidays, but she did know that Michael wanted to do this,” Whitney replied with a grin on her face. “She made me promise that some of the photos would have to include the kids too.”
Walter turned and slid the platter into his hands. “Come on… tell me about South Africa while I start getting the food on the table…”
Walter was about to walk into the dining room but stopped as he saw Mick and Reagan in there. Reagan was opening a box and he heard a gasp. “Mick… I didn’t need a gift… and I can’t accept this.”
“You haven’t opened it,” Mick pointed out and Reagan dropped her hands but held onto the box. “I didn’t buy you a gift, Mick… that’s why I can’t open this.”
“I didn’t buy you it because I expected something in return,” Mick explained and Walter pushed Whitney back into the kitchen but hung close enough to spy because this didn’t sound like the Mick that Walter knew.
“But Mick…”
“There is something that you can give me… give me a true date,” Mick countered as he could see that Reagan was not going to open that box. Reagan shook her head from side to side. “I am not looking for a boyfriend.”
“One date doesn’t make me your boyfriend.”
Walter almost snorted as he almost considered these two to be dating even if they had never been out on a date. Mick could only offer to go ice skating and shopping when Reagan took Sabina so many times.
Reagan frowned but sighed. “Ok… but nowhere fancy… and just dinner.”
“Dinner and a movie,” Mick bargained back and Reagan groaned. “It has to be an action movie.”
“Sounds good,” Mick grinned back as he looked to the box. “Open it.”
Reagan opened the box and saw the delicate gold chain holding a very small but detailed owl. She touched it with her little finger and looked up at Mick. “What… how?”
“When we were working on your apartment,” Mick nodded his head up and down. “You said that you thought of owls when you needed to find peace… so I wanted to help give you peace all the time.”
Mick stepped forward to take the box out of her hands. “Come on… turn around…”
Walter stepped further back and saw Whitney with her hands on her hips. “Spying on the new couple?”
“Just seeing how far Mick was willing to go to get a date,” Walter quipped and was relieved when he heard Mick and Reagan going into the other room. Walter handed the turkey to Whitney. “We are running late… and I got to get the rolls out…. Start someone on getting drinks… I only hope we only have to open up three bottles of wine…”
