Michael walked over to the chair and extended the shirt. “Put this on, Kita.”
Nikita barely turned her head as she lifted a hand from the keyboard, sitting naked at it, working feverishly. Michael stood there as he had pulled on jeans when he pulled himself away from things and tried to give Nikita some time to figure out what was going on. He had even taken a shower, but it was more than an hour and Nikita hadn’t said a word from the moment that she ran out of the room with tears in her eyes.
Michael watched numbly as Nikita didn’t even take her hands away from the keyboard long enough to properly put his shirt on. She pulled it up and over her head and quickly slid each arm in while the other continued to move rapidly. Michael looked at the screen and cleared his throat. “Kita…. What’s going on?”
Nikita didn’t respond. She just hunched closer and shook her head from side to side. Michael shifted and then pulled the chair away from the desk. “You need to tell me that we are ok. That we are safe. That our children are safe.”
But her mind was back on that screen. Michael had to bend down and take Nikita’s face into his hands. “Are we safe?”
Nikita blinked her blue eyes as if she was waking up. “Of course.”
Michael dropped his hands away and exhaled as he didn’t realize that he had been holding his breath. During those moments, Nikita pulled herself back to the computer and it took Michael a moment to compose himself. “Maybe we should call Jason to help.”
Nikita didn’t respond. She was focused on the screen, shutting Michael out. He waited and then pulled at the chair again, causing Nikita to be physically removed from the computer. “Kita, you need to tell me what is going on.”
“Someone… who should never be reaching out…” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She reached her hands up to her face and shivered as she didn’t want to think about things and only wanted to fix things.
Erica dropped her side arm and looked around the room. It was eerily quiet. It shouldn’t be this quiet. She turned and saw her charge, her love, Logan entering the room and dropping the side arm also. He turned with dark eyes and studied her. “What’s going on?”
Erica tried communications again, but got nothing. It was like they had just walked into the Twilight Zone and not a hot mission, one with a very slim possibility of a positive outcome and one that had a high probability that it was a suicide mission for them.
From the moment that she had met Logan as he was assigned to her, she tried to fight against what she felt when she saw him. There was no one in Section that hadn’t heard the rumors of how Operations got as cold as she was and of the love that she had to lose. That man, Michael, should have been running Section and instead Operations was running it.
Of course Erica had been asked to call her Nikita. She was one of the very few that were given such an honor. The other two were Jason and Walter. That is what had made it even harder to understand why this mission had been given to her, but when Logan was assigned also, she was sure that it was because of orders from above – that Nikita was told to end them.
“Erica?” Logan inquired as she turned in a circle and focused on him again. She was stunned and not sure what to do now. She didn’t know what this meant.
“Drop everything right there… there are bags in the corner… change into the clothes and get out of the building,” Nikita spoke as she stepped out from the shadows. She tossed keys in the air and Logan caught them. “There is a car three blocks east… seven blocks north… you’ll receive further instructions there… and you’ll never try to contact us… this life is now over.”
Erica studied Nikita as she stood there. Logan moved to the bags and tossed one to Erica. “Come on, Erica…”
“Why are you doing this?” Erica inquired and Nikita blinked her eyes. “You don’t have time to stall. This building is going to implode… a community center will eventually be built here…”
“Why?” Erica’s voice grew louder and Nikita tilted her head to the side. “This wasn’t meant to be your life.”
“And your letting us go together? Two of us together? Or are we going to find instructions that we have to separate… and never see each other… how do we know that this isn’t a plot…” Erica fired out and Nikita stepped forward. “I can see the true love.”
Nikita’s voice had cracked and she turned her head to the side. Erica rubbed her hands against her legs. “He is still alive.”
“Erica…”
“Wait,” Erica ordered Logan as she stepped forward so she could step in front of Nikita. “Michael… he is still alive.”
Nikita didn’t respond. “You’ll find instructions on how to permanently remove the trackers. You have to do that within the first 48 hours… you must do that.”
“And if something goes wrong?” Logan inquired and Nikita twitched. “They can’t.”
“Because this isn’t sanctioned,” Erica finished and she picked up the bag. “Why?”
“Someone deserves a good life,” Nikita spoke as she turned away and continued to walk into the shadows, disappearing and leaving the happy couple alone to leave while their memories were given a fiery death to Section One.
Even before Section One was starting to close.
“Kita…” Michael firmly spoke and Nikita stood up. “Why is Erica contacting me? It’s been… God… why is only Erica contacting me… both of them should be trying… separate ways… they both had a way…”
Michael followed Nikita. “Who is Erica?”
Nikita stopped and her legs gave away. “They have to be together… they have to be together…”
“Kita?” Michael spoke but Nikita melted right there, her face crumbling with tears, her thoughts of getting more information gone. She was lost with what she had done back then and why she had done it. It had been a year after she had given birth to Sabina. She had known that Erica and Logan had almost been found out by Paul and Madeline but honestly her existence with Michael had kept the couple safe. There was no denying that alone they were good, but together, they finished each other.
Nikita thought that was the way that she was with Michael when they were allowed to function in that manner. She didn’t do anything to break them apart but she was careful not to show preferential treatment to them, even when that meant sending Logan out on a couple iffy missions. Nikita had known the risk of sending Logan out because Erica wouldn’t have survived long without him.
It had almost been Erica that was going to find out about Nikita’s daughter, but Nikita didn’t want their release to be seen as an attack of Nikita’s guilty conscious. In ways it was a birthday gift for her daughter, but it needed to happen. This couple deserved that second chance.
But Nikita now feared that if Erica was the only one trying to get in touch with her that this was bad. She had thought that nothing would pull Erica and Logan apart. She never did try to track them in any manner. She had given them both an obscure way to contact her if absolutely necessary. She never expected to be contacted.
But only Erica had contacted her.
If Erica and Logan couldn’t stay together, did that mean that things were only going good right now because they were new with Michael?
Nikita had never told a soul about this. Walter had asked when she had released him if she had done this before. She had told him no. So he thought that she had sent Erica and Logan out on a suicide mission as directed by Oversight. Oversight hadn’t even been aware of the couple. Nikita had protected them. She had lied to everyone else in order to get them out and to have no one looking for them at all.
But now Erica was looking for her.
