Michael walked into the bedroom and looked at Nikita as she was at the window, staring out into the night. “Kita?”

Nikita turned her head and looked at Michael. “No sign of Logan…. And I got another message from Erica. She wouldn’t do that if she had more time, Michael.”

“Davenport has scoped out a location. We could go in the morning,” Michael offered and Nikita winced while she looked back outside. Michael stood there, waiting for a response but didn’t get one. He sighed heavily. “Kita?”

“Sabina,” Nikita’s voice rasped as she shook her head slightly from side to side, knowing not to look at Michael at the moment as her emotions were almost ready to spill over.

“She was pretty upset this evening,” Michael commented as he sat at the foot of the bed, looking at Nikita as she pressed her standing body closer to the window. He watched her shifted her weight from side to side and he sighed again, waiting for Nikita to talk.

“Something is going on… and I want to think that it is just going back to school… but she was so mad at Adam… and then at Reagan… and she isn’t going to be happy tomorrow…”

Michael frowned. “How do you know that?”

“Because you know how things are going to go with Mick and Reagan tonight. Reagan might be able to delay what is going to happen… but everyone senses what is between them… Sabina has that right,” Nikita spoke and then she looked towards Michael. “We’ve been so lucky with her, Michael… but I’ve been dreading… something like this.”

“She is a young girl who doesn’t want to go back to school and is upset with people having their own lives,” Michael shook his head but he stopped as he saw Nikita’s face. She thought it was more.

“I’ve been waiting… for this,” Nikita rasped as she twisted her hands and leaned her back against the window. She glanced over her shoulder and drew in a deep breath. “She was so happy to have us… but at some point… she has to be upset at me, Michael. I fear that this is just the start… that now that she has been with us… she now is starting to think about how much… she didn’t get…”

“I don’t… believe that,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “Sabina is fine, Kita.”

“She needs me right now… and I don’t know why she is so very upset… but I’m going to be going to Erica…. When I need to be here.”

Michael couldn’t take the distance any longer. He stood up to grab Nikita to bring her to the bed. He forced her into his lap as he sat there and held her in his arms. Nikita wasn’t sobbing, but she wasn’t sure about the situation. Michael didn’t think that Sabina truly needed her mother as much as Nikita thought she needed her right now. It was possible that come tomorrow morning that Sabina would be ok with things.

“Ever since… I… I… I… I didn’t give her what she wanted for Christmas…” Nikita murmured and Michael shook his head. “She never had the right to ask for that… and I think she knows that Nikita. It was just one way that she was testing our boundaries… and she knew that she crossed it on Christmas.”

Michael kissed Nikita’s neck and leaned his head down on her shoulder. “I can go and meet with Erica myself.”

Nikita chuckled. “That isn’t going to happen.”

“I’m more than capable.”

“She thinks that you are dead,” Nikita commented and Michael waited for Nikita to look at him. She sighed. “Well… technically…”

“She figured out that I was alive when you got her out, Kita,” Michael corrected. Nikita sighed and exhaled again. “Would you want someone else to show up if you contacted another person? Or would you run and never try contact again?”

Michael knew the answer and he swallowed. “If you contacted her prior.”

“She gave me a drop box, Michael. There isn’t going to be a chance to converse,” Nikita shook her head. “God… it sucks…”

“You aren’t responsible for her, Kita. You don’t have to do this.”

“I wouldn’t have to do it if I didn’t give her a way to contact me,” Nikita shook her head as she tried to get out of Michael’s arms. Michael shook his own head as he held onto Nikita. “We figure this out together.”

“Not much to figure out,” Nikita spat as she rolled her shoulders back. “Sabina is going to have to wait.”

“It’s so wrong,” Nikita almost broke into tears as she said the words.

“I’ve had to do it to Adam… it doesn’t feel good… but sometimes… on small things… it happens… and it tears at your heart,” Michael explained as he knew that Nikita simply didn’t have the experience. She would do anything for Sabina, but there were times that what children needed wasn’t needed right away. “She’ll be here when we get back.”

Nikita nodded her head slowly. Several minutes later Nikita had moved to lean against the headboard but Michael knew that it wasn’t over. She was twisting the sheets up in her fingers and Michael went to lean against the headboard also. “Kita?”

“I don’t know… what I’ll do when I find out that Sabina hates me… for having to give her up when she was a baby,” Nikita shook her head. “And there has to be anger there, Michael. I was older when... . my mother… did…”

“Your mother was never good to you,” Michael corrected as he didn’t reach for Nikita this time. “You know that she never did anything for you. Maybe Sabina is upset about not having the time with you… but at some point, we’ll be able to tell her what would have happened to her… and to you… if you didn’t do what you did.”

Nikita swung her head from side to side. “She never is to find that out, Michael. There is no reason… because then she’ll feel guilty… and no…”

“She is too smart, Kita. Somehow, even if we try to never tell her, it will come out,” Michael warned as he knew that right now, he wasn’t going to change Nikita’s mind. He just needed to get Nikita, and their family, thru the next couple days and whatever lay ahead of them.
