Adam looked at the door and his father by Nikita’s side as they sat next to Sabina’s bed after her successful laparoscopic appendectomy. Sabina was awake and Adam could tell that things hadn’t really gotten better between Nikita and his sister.
“Hi…” Adam spoke as he entered the room and held out the stuffed hippopotamus to Sabina. She took it and squeezed. The sound brought forth brought a slight smile from Sabina. “Just like Abby’s.”
“Abby’s?” Michael asked as he was confused with what this meant. He didn’t know that Sabina had a friend named Abby.
“The forensic scientist on NCIS,” Adam supplied and Sabina nodded her head. “I want to be like her when I grow up... minus the skull and bones.”
Nikita looked at Michael and shrugged her shoulders. Adam rolled his eyes. Sometime his dad and Nikita would catch up with pop culture once they realized how much Sabina was picking up from it. “Maybe you two would like to go get some coffee… take a walk outside… I’ll keep Sabina company… and Walter dropped me off at the front door so he’ll be here soon.”
Michael could tell that Adam wanted to speak with Sabina. He wasn’t sure if it was wise, but Nikita hadn’t left the hospital at all since they arrived yesterday and she needed to take a break.
“That’s such a nice offer, Adam,” Nikita spoke as she stood up before even looking at Michael. She looked at Michael and touched his face. She knew that Michael thought that she wouldn’t want to go, but the reality was, she needed space again. Sabina was answering her questions, but she wasn’t really talking to her.
Nikita moved to the bed and Sabina turned her head towards her mother. “I’m fine, Mommy.”
Nikita cupped her daughter’s cheek and nodded her head. “We won’t be gone long… and you heard Adam, Walter is coming to visit too.”
Adam watched his father leave the room, noting that he thought that Adam was up to something. Adam waited and closed the door. He moved to the bed and sighed. “Your friends at school made you cards… we had school today…”
Sabina blinked her eyes and Adam watched as she remembered what she was going to do. “I missed the test!”
“The one that your one friend was going to pass because of you?” Adam inquired as he tilted his head to the side. Sabina squeezed her eyes shut. “She needed my help…”
“That would be Sherry, right?” Adam asked and Sabina barely moved her head up and down. Adam exhaled. “Well… she gave me the cards… and told me that she didn’t need you to give her hand signals for this test because her dad had to stay home with her yesterday because of the snow… and he studied and promises to help her each night.”
Sabina was stunned and Adam leaned against the railing. “So… I guess I don’t have to tell dad or Nikita about this.”
“Thank you,” Sabina whispered. Adam nodded his head barely. “So… are you going to start talking to Nikita.”
“I have been talking to my mom. She helped me when I was sick,” Sabina protested but she turned her head away. Adam swung his head from side to side. “You are lying. You aren’t old enough to learn how to hide your lies yet.”
Sabina frowned. “I just want them to be happy… and mommy was so happy to get me back… why doesn’t she want to have another child? Daddy does?”
Adam swallowed hard and went to the chair that Nikita had pulled up close to the bed. “Look, Sabina… there are things that you just don’t need to know.”
“About Section?” Sabina inquired and Adam felt like a bucket of ice water had been thrown over his head. “What?”
“They whisper sometimes… everyone does… but not quietly enough…” Sabina admitted as she squeezed the hippopotamus again and then looked at Adam. “And I may have… gotten into some computers.”
“I didn’t teach you how to do that,” Adam rasped and Sabina shrugged her shoulders. “I wasn’t really trying… one day I just followed things and I just found things…”
Adam exhaled slightly as he realized that Sabina might know some more about Section now because of the computer, but that she probably stumbled into one of the many fake systems that both his father and Nikita kept, let alone what Jason had running that they could possibly access. But still, Sabina wouldn’t have looked more if she hadn’t overheard things. “Sabina… its better that you forget about what you saw… and what you heard… they don’t want it to hurt you.”
“So it’s ok for them to lie?” Sabina questioned as there was a knock at the door. Adam had been expecting Walter but instead it was Ellie. “Hi Adam… I just need to check on Sabina. I’ll stay here for a couple minutes and I need you to step out into the hall... ok?”
Adam needed to figure things out and he nodded his head as he slipped out of the room. But as he exited, he found Walter there. Walter frowned. “What’s wrong?”
He couldn’t hold it in. “She knows.”
Walter was confused and he shifted the bag of handmade cards to his other hand as he touched Adam’s shoulder. “Knows what?”
“She knows about Section.”
Walter couldn’t censor himself. “Shit.”
