“Go take your shower… because I don’t trust you spyboy!” Walter flapped his hands towards the door after he practically had to pry Michael off of Nikita when they finally made it to the kitchen. Walter had to start the omelet for Nikita over because it had gone cold.
No cold food for the bride today.
“I’m fine, Michael,” Nikita spoke as Michael stood there, slowly crossing his arms as he blinked his eyes at Walter. “I know.”
“Then what’s the blank stare for?” Nikita quipped as she tried to make Michael smile. Walter tilted his head and Michael looked the older man up and down. “You know why.”
“It’s a term of endearment,” Walter replied as he then winked at Michael, hoping that the man would just give Walter some time with Nikita. He knew that Nikita was ok and she was going to have a great day. Walter just wanted a few moments with her.
“I never want to hear that term again,” Michael spoke firmly and Nikita raised an eyebrow. Michael sounded very serious with saying that. She turned her head and looked over her shoulder. “I won’t include spyboy in my vows.”
Michael rolled his eyes as he chuckled. He wouldn’t even care if Nikita did use it. He was just happy to have her making vows. “I’ll go…”
Nikita tilted her head and studied Walter as he hummed while heading back to the stove. “Why did you do that?”
Walter sighed and picked up the cheese. “What kind do you want?”
“The cheddar,” Nikita replied as she continued to stare at Walter. “You chased him out of here.”
Walter sighed as he looked down at the stove. “I don’t want to ruin this omelet again… can we talk when I get this done?”
“You are going to answer my questions. Getting me to eat isn’t going to stop that from happening,” Nikita warned as she knew Walter long enough to know that he was up to something.
And just as he promised, Walter sat down to Nikita’s side and held a cup of coffee as Nikita took a bite of her omelet. “I understand why you are walking down the aisle with Michael… I like it a lot… but I wanted you to know… I think of you more than… just a friend, Sugar.”
Nikita swallowed hard and placed her fork down. “Walter…”
“No,” Walter shook his head back and forth. “I know that we’ve had bumpy times… I don’t always do the right thing and I know that you struggled with things…”
“I made you do a horrible thing… and I didn’t give you an opportunity to say no,” Nikita rasped and Walter took Nikita’s hand and rubbed it. “You did what you had to do. That’s why Sabina is with us. That is water under the bridge, Sugar.”
Nikita blinked quickly and shook her head back and forth. “I haven’t told you sorry enough… I took advantage… and I just haven’t said it enough.”
Walter shook his head back and forth as he choked up now, almost tearing up. “Sugar, I don’t need to hear that. We are fine.”
“Maybe I need to say it more,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders lightly. Walter took his hand off of Nikita’s hand and stroked the back of it against her chin. “No. I won’t accept it any more. And this was not what I was trying to say.”
Nikita nervously laughed while Walter laughed trying to change the mood. Walter sighed and looked at Nikita. “He is a great man… and he got to be a great man because of you, Nikita.”
It was odd to hear Walter call her by her own name. She sucked in some air and exhaled shakily. “I just followed my heart.”
“And it made me a better person too… I never gave you enough credit… But name, Sugar, you were a little mouse of a person when Michael brought you into munitions the first time… I couldn’t believe that Madeline had assigned such a beautiful woman that seemed to be so fragile when I saw her… and you showed me so much… such a fighter for that heart of yours.”
Nikita blinked back tears again. “Walter…”
“No… don’t stop me,” Walter interrupted as he shook his head. “Because I don’t know if you truly realize how much you have changed… and embraced that fighter… and I guess it was there because you survived things in your childhood… but that fighter blossomed under Michael as you just did what you needed to do… Never did I think that mouse of a woman was going to be the perfect match for Michael.”
“You probably thought he was going to just steamroll me,” Nikita commented as she tried to stop Walter.
“Or some other type of hell like that… instead you helped him find his heart,” Walter shook his head back and forth as he touched Nikita’s shoulder with his hand this time, pushing her slightly with a tender punch of sorts. “And never in my wildest dreams… did I think it would be you to stop… Madeline and Paul… and never ever did I think I’d be out… let alone that you, that girl from the streets that didn’t get to have a life… would give life back to so many of us and end Section… I don’t think I’ve ever thanked you enough for that.”
Nikita didn’t have words. Instead, she launched herself to hug Walter. She squeezed him tightly. “If I had to be walked down the aisle to Michael… you were the only option… I know how much you are for me… and you never have to thank me for doing what was right.”
Walter patted Nikita’s back and pulled away, whisking the tears off of his face. “Ok… enough… no more apologizes and no more thanks… so we are even.”
Nikita chuckled as she picked up her fork, finding that the omelet was a good thing to turn to now. “If we are done… I want to eat this while the cheese is still oozy.”
“We are done,” Walter nodded his head as he stood up. He watched Nikita take a bite and she groaned with happiness of the taste. He paused and kissed the top of Nikita’s head before going back to the stove. “So… cheddar cheese for spyboy too?”
