Adam pushed the eggs around on the plate as he just wasn’t hungry as he sat there with Gretchen. He wished that he had decided to cancel this breakfast time with her. She wasn’t happy sitting across from him and Adam didn’t want that mood to rub off onto him. Not today.
Gretchen placed her fork down as she was having some pecan pancakes and finally looked over at Adam. “I thought you liked the skillets.”
“I’m pacing myself today,” Adam replied and Gretchen frowned. “Do you need to rub it in?”
Adam groaned as he leaned back from the table. “Gretchen, it’s not like I picked where the wedding was going to be. You know that I wanted you to be there.”
“Lisa is going to be there,” Gretchen stated and Adam nodded his head up and down. “She is a friend of the family.”
Gretchen snorted and shook her head slightly. “And you spent time with her yesterday.”
“Because you don’t like to go on hikes… and you don’t like to go on runs. So I do those things with my friend and then I spend other time with you,” Adam explained as he rubbed his forehead. “I’m sorry about how this is making you feel, Gretchen.”
Gretchen folded her arms across her chest and stared at him. “Really? I think you like spending time with Lisa.”
Adam knew that he wasn’t in a position to win this conversation. But it wasn’t about winning. He needed Gretchen to understand. “She’s your friend. What is wrong with me spending time with her? You get along with Lisa.”
“Doesn’t mean that I want my boyfriend to spend time with her,” Gretchen snapped as she picked up her fork and then slammed it down. “I’m sorry… that sounded bitchy.”
“It was,” Adam agreed as he continued to push his food around on the plate, forcing himself to take a bite of the sausage.
Gretchen rubbed her hand against her temple and exhaled. “Weddings are so romantic… soft candlelight… soft music… dancing… dresses…”
“Some weddings,” Adam pointed out as he shook his head slightly. “You don’t really know my parents… they aren’t going to have that traditional soft wedding that you are envisioning.”
“Parents?” Gretchen inquired and Adam shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve known Nikita… forever… and hearing Sabina call her mom… and she is marrying my father today… she is my family.”
Gretchen looked around and Adam gasped. “You are thinking that I told Lisa all of this first…. I never even said the phrase my parents before with anyone, Gretchen. How can you be so jealous when you don’t even know what’s going on?”
“Oh?” Gretchen jerked. “Something is going on?”
“You think there is,” Adam accused as he swung his head from side to side. “Which is ridiculous.”
“It’s not,” Gretchen declared with a shrug of her shoulders. “I know that I’m not your match, Adam… I don’t stimulate your mind as much… I don’t like school as much… I don’t understand why you even do more work when you are home than what you have to do for school... and I don’t know how you can enjoy it… and I know that Lisa likes those things… She is much more your equal.”
Adam took his milk and drank some as he didn’t have anything to say right now. He couldn’t believe that Gretchen was becoming so uncomfortable with who she was and that she was belittling herself to someone that was her friend. For no reason at all. It made things hard and it had been hard for some time now. “Gretchen… are we breaking up?”
She stared at Adam with tears in her eyes. Her shoulders went up slightly as she shook her head from side to side. “I… I don’t know… I don’t know, Adam.”
Adam folded his hands in front of him and simply knew. “I have my answer.”
Adam started to move and Gretchen reached out for his hand. “What do you mean by that?”
Adam stopped and swung his head at Gretchen. “We are breaking up… we’re over.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But you didn’t say, ‘No, we aren’t breaking up, Adam.’ Instead you indicated that you didn’t know… which means on some level, you know that we are breaking up but you just don’t want to say it because you think you would rather have me miserable with you than having the possibility that I’ll just run to Lisa’s arms,” Adam outlined as he shook his head from side to side. Gretchen’s mouth was moving as she was trying to say something, but she wasn’t sure what to say.
Adam pushed Gretchen’s hand off of his arm. “I have to go… take a run… by myself. Because I won’t let this ruin today for my parents. They deserve to have the perfect wedding and this isn’t going to make me ruin it for them.”
Gretchen rolled her eyes. “And you’ll just happen to run into Lisa…”
Adam stood up and placed money on the table. “I don’t know what happened to you, Gretchen. But I do wish you happiness… we both knew that a high school romance probably wasn’t going to be the big love of our lives… but this wasn’t the way that I wanted it to end… I was willing to work on it if you were… Goodbye.”
