Subject: DCS Taping (looong and lots o' spoilers)

I went to the final DCS taping of the season last night. They were supposed to do a bunch of pretaping, but because of the rain they couldn't, so they had to do a bunch of last minute rewrites, and the taping was pushed back two hours. I was expecting it to last forever, but it wasn't too bad. About 4 1/2 hours. Before the taping started, they showed us the episode that had been taped the previous week. I'm not sure how they're going to use the date Drew set for the wedding since it'll be showing this summer, but he was still trying to meet his deadline. He met this southern woman named Lilly, and in the episode we were shown, he decides with his deadline a few short days away to ask her to marry him. She turns him down twice, because she thinks he's just asking her because of the deadline. She had her bags packed and was preparing to leave the house when Drew asked her not to marry him. He canceled all his plans because he loved her and didn't want to lose her, so he was willing to wait until she was ready. She got all teary eyed and told him that they should get married, so the wedding was on. We later found out from the entertainment guy that Drew met Lilly through an advertising campaign put together by Lewis and Oswald. They put Drew's picture on buzz beer bottles, and Lilly found one in Louisiana (I think). Lilly has a southern accent, and I have to say it was really grating on my nerves by the end of the taping. I'm not sure why since I like a southern accent, but to me it either sounded like hers was fake or if not she was exaggerating it.

DCS Taping
Season Finale
3-15-03

First scene started in Drew's living room. Lewis and Oswald were sitting there writing a speech for Drew's wedding. Lewis asked Oswald to read his speech, which was basically that he'd known Drew since he was 10 years old and that he was happy to see him in love with Lilly. Ryan, with this amazed look on his face, said that was the exact same speech that he wrote, "Word for word." Oswald thought about it for a second and said that Ryan had known Drew since he was 8. Ryan said, "Except for that word." Oswald tore his speech off the pad of paper and said he'd better start again. Lewis told him, "I should say so," and he took the paper changing the 10 to and 8 and then announced that he was done. On the second take, he said that he was keeping Oswald's copy because he had neater handwriting. Drew and his mother entered through the front door. Oswald stood up to greet her, and she gave him a hug and said that he looked handsomer every time she saw him. Lewis also stood up, and she looked at him and with that sad voice said, "Lewis, pathetic Lewis." People on the floor were blocking my view of Ryan, so I couldn't see his reaction to her. Lewis asked where her husband was, "I'm guessing he filled his pockets with rocks and walked into the sea." During the second take, she changed it to, "Lewis, poor sad Lewis." She said that her husband couldn't make it because he bought a gun and shot himself in the foot. For the second take they changed it to the gun blowing up and then during one of the pickups she changed it to, "Mr. Funnyman had to make a joke about a bomb at the airport." That one got the best crowd reaction, so I think that's the one they'll end up using. Drew asked his Mom if she wanted to meet Lilly, and she said she did but she wanted to tidy up a bit first, "I don't want her to think I live in a boxcar." They all sat down, and Mrs. Carey was checking her makeup when screaming came from upstairs. Lilly and her mother were fighting over her marrying Drew because she'd only known him for three weeks. Her mother told her that she'd found out about Drew being in a mental institution and marrying two women at the same time. Lilly told her that she didn't have any right to tell her who to marry. To break the awkward tension in the living room, Drew asked his mother how her flight was. She said the flight was fine, but someone had stolen her good tweezers at the gate. Later they changed it to security took her good tweezers at the gate, which was much funnier. Lilly's mother stormed out down the stairs and through the living room with Lilly behind her. Her mother went through the front door slamming it behind her. Drew introduced Lilly to his Mom, who told her to excuse the wild eyebrow hair. Mrs. Carey and Lilly sat down on the couch to talk. Mrs. Carey said that she was a tiny little thing, "Carey babies have big heads. I'll start praying now that you survive childbirth." Lilly thanked her and said that she didn't believe all the things her mother said about Drew. Drew said they were mostly true and everyone else said they were true. Lilly told Drew that was wanted to talk to him in private in the kitchen. As they were walking out of the room Oswald said that if it was like her conversation upstairs they might as well stay there.

They had to set up the camera in the kitchen, and the scene started with Lilly saying to Drew that she understood that Mimi was responsible for putting him in the mental institution, but what about marrying two women at the same time? Drew told her that he didn't want to take the time to go into detail, but if he did she would realize that the reason he did it really was sweet. She told him that she had plenty of time. Drew told her that what really mattered was that he learned from his mistakes and that he loved her. Lilly fell for it and gave him a hug. When she did that Drew whispered, "Touchdown." Lilly asked him what, and he said, "Your touch is soft as down." A few seconds later the doorbell rang.

They reset in the living room with Oswald answering the door. In came Mr. Wick and the audience gave him a hearty round of applause. He was wearing a suit and basically looked a lot like the old Mr. Wick except for a little bit longer hair. and he was very tan. Oswald asked him why his hair was so poofy and why he was so tan. Mr. Wick said that he was working as a Scottish Weatherman for a station in Toledo doing the Christian forecast. Lewis asked him how the Christian weather differed from the regular weather, and he said instead of saying it might rain tomorrow I say, "God might make it rain tomorrow." Drew introduced him to Lilly, and Mr. Wick told her that he hoped Drew made her happy, "I did alright by him." Lilly was like what do you mean by that, and he told her that he and Drew had been married for a year and a half. Seeing the look on Lilly's face, Mr. Wick excused himself and went into the kitchen. Drew said to Lilly that the message here should be that he was still friends with is ex. They sat down on the couch to talk, and Drew started feeding her the same speech about how he'd learned from his mistakes and that he loved her that he'd said in the kitchen. Lilly said that didn't he just say that in the kitchen, and he kind of turned it around on her saying couldn't he express that he loved her. Drew's Mom interrupted them and told her the only reason Drew married Mr. Wick was so that he could get his green card, "and take weather men jobs away from real Americans." Drew said it was okay because no Americans wanted those jobs because they were demeaning.

Next Kellie entered through the front door carrying Drew's tux. She greeted Drew's mother and then said to Drew that she knew he wanted the black vest and bow tie, but she found a vest in a shade of blue that would bring out his eyes. Just then, Mr. Wick leaned out of the kitchen and seeing Kellie said hi to her. Drew looked him and said, "No." Lilly said that Kellie was a grown woman and she could date anyone she wanted. Drew said he knew that, but he was just looking out for his friend. Mr. Wick walked across the living room and told Kellie, that he would see her on Friday at 8:00. Kellie, clearly trying to make Drew jealous, said that it sounded good to her. They were standing pretty close, so Mr. Wick put his arm around her and said that he forecast 6 inches overnight. She got the willies and shuddered and pushed him away from her. For the second take they changed Mr. Wick’s line to that he forecast 9 inches overnight. While we were waiting for them to tape the pickups, the entertainer guy said how he thought it was great how we applauded every time someone came in through the door, so the cast started going in and out through the door just to get us to clap. The director came over to Craig and told him that he was going back to 6. He said something about how he couldn't handle the fact that he had a big cock, "You can't handle the truth." I do have to mention something that I find amusing. Craig Ferguson has a Scottish accent so during the breaks he speaks in a Scottish accent, which I know is natural for him, but it just sounds wrong. For the pickups Mr. Wick went back to forecast 6 inches overnight, and I don't remember Kellie's comeback, but I do remember that it was insulting.

Next we're in Drew's living room for his Bachelor party. They had this girl in blue metallic hot pants, a lighter blue bra, and feather boa dancing on Drew's coffee table while Mr. Wick and a guy I haven't seen before was sitting on Drew's coach. Drew was sitting in his easy chair. Mr. Wick asked the new guy how he knew Drew and it turns out he was a bus driver that Drew knew. Steve entered the living room from the kitchen and bent down next to Drew to say something. Instead he started laughing and said to the girl dancing on the table that she was very good. That got everyone laughing, so they had to start again. They started again with the girl dancing on the table and Steve and Lewis entered the room from the kitchen. Drew asked Lewis where he'd found the stripper and he said she was his niece. Drew asked him wasn't it weird for him to see his niece like that. Lewis responded with, "Weird, icky, exciting." Oswald entered the room carrying a box of flowers. When he saw Lewis' niece he stopped and said, "Hi Amber. How's your Mom?" Oswald told Drew that since he'd canceled the florist, they were stuck with a bunch of flowers with now one to make the table arrangements.

Next we move to Kellie's apartment. This was shot in an area of the set that I couldn't see, so I watched on one of the monitors. Mulan from Winford and Lauder was there along with her hubby who was very old. She said that since the store closed, she had to marry an old rich guy. Mimi, Lilly and Mrs. Carey were sitting at a table. Lilly was opening presents. Mrs. Carey said she went a little crazy when she picked hers out. Lilly opened it and it was a pair of leopard print briefs for Drew. Mrs. Carey said she wanted another grandchild. Lilly's cell phone rang, so she excused herself to take the call. When she came back she was crying saying that her mother had talked her entire family out of going to the wedding. Mrs. Carey said that it was sad, but the person she loved most in the world was going to be there. Lilly asked her who, and Mrs. Carey said Drew. Lilly was kind of flustered and apologized saying she hadn't slept much the past few nights. She sat back down, and Mrs. Carey said I'm glad we had this chat and then looking over at the kitchen, "Alcohol." She went into the kitchen where Kellie was getting some wine. Kellie asked Mrs. Carey if Drew was a cute baby. She hadn't seen any of his baby pictures because Drew wouldn't show them to her. Mrs. Carey pulled out a baby picture of Drew and handed it to Kellie. When she looked at the picture, Kelly said in this quiet voice that Drew was adorable and then she sat down. Mrs. Carey looked at her closer, and Kellie said, "I mean you draw glasses on him and he looks the same." Mrs. Carey said, and now he's all grown up and getting married. Kellie responded with a sad yes. Mrs. Carey said that she sounded like someone had died. Just then Mimi entered the room with a police officer saying that they must have made too much noise. Of course he was a stripper and proceeded to strip down to his underwear. After seeing that Mrs. Carey said that it looked like the leopard underwear she got was going to be too big. The second time they changed it to tiger underwear and during the pickups they changed it back to leopard. During the bachlorette party, Drew's Mom starts having feelings that Lilly doesn't love Drew but Kellie does.

We move back to the living room. In the living room were boxes of flowers everywhere. Drew, Lewis, Oswald, Steve, Mr. Wick, the bus driver and Amber were all making the flower arrangements. Steve was working on this big one using very exaggerated movements in his creation. Drew's Mom walked in with her had over he eyes and said she didn't wan to see what they were up to, but she needed to talk to Drew. She looked and just saw a group of guys arranging flowers. She and Drew went into the kitchen. They moved the cameras into the kitchen without stopping. Drew's Mom told him that she suspected that Lilly didn't love him. Drew asked him how she knew that, and she said she saw it in her eyes. Then she told him that she thought that Kellie loved him, "Again, it was in her eyes." Drew says that's it he's going to call off the wedding. His Mom was relieved but he was don't you know sarcasm when you hear it. Steve walked in, and Drew told him that their Mom was trying to get him to cancel the wedding. Steve told him that she tried to talk him out of marrying Mimi too, but if he'd listened to her, he would have made the worse mistake of his life, and he wouldn't wake up every morning next to the woman he loved. Drew decided the wedding would go on as planned. While they were in the kitchen, the bus driver came in and told him that Oswald was using Carnations in his arrangements. Drew said that he didn't care and the bus driver said, "Fine, it's your wedding."

Next is the wedding day. I could only see part of the church from where I was sitting, so I watched most of this scene on the monitors. Drew's Mom and Mimi were sitting in the first pew, Oswald, Lewis and Kellie and Mulan were sitting behind them and behind them was the bus driver and Mr. Wick. On Lilly's side of the church there was just one woman. Steve was Drew's Best Man. Kellie decided that Lilly should have more people on her side, so she moved over to the other side. Oswald started talking to Lewis about finding someone he could love, so he could get married someday. Thinking that someday might never come he said, "Oswald sad now." We move to Drew's Mom telling Mimi that she had a feeling that Drew loved Kellie not Lilly. Mimi told her that she knew something. but she promised Kellie that she wouldn't tell, but if she told her in code and she guessed it, it would be okay. Mimi said, "BKelly Bloves Bdrew." Drew's Mom got up and ran over to Kelly and told her that she knew how she felt about Drew and she knew for a fact that Drew felt the same way about her. Just then the music started and everyone stood. Kellie said it was too late, and Drew's Mom ran back to her seat running by the Maid of Honor who was walking up the aisle at the time. Lilly walked up the aisle, and the priest got to the part about if anyone objects to speak now or forever hold their peace. Everyone turned around to look at Kellie. She just said that at she was good, but everyone kept looking at her, so she pretended to drop her program and then dropped down behind the seat to grab it. The priest read Drew and Lilly their vows, and they were married. They reshot this scene more times than I can remember, because they needed to get it from so many different angles.

The next scene was taped earlier in the day, but for some reason they couldn't show it to us, so the director, Bob Cohen, came over and told us what happened. Drew and Lilly were outside the church, and Lilly had thrown her bouquet when she freaked out and bolted for the car. Drew made a joke that she was just bringing the car around. She came back and took off her ring and told Drew that she just wasn't ready and left.

The next scene started in the reception hall. The shot started with a close up of the top of the cake, and you could see Drew slightly out of focus in the background sitting alone at a table. Slowly Drew came into focus and they moved back, so you could see the band playing. The band stopped playing and asked Drew if they should go on, and he said that he was paying them for six hours and to keep playing. They started playing a slow song when Kellie walked in. She sat next to Drew and took his hand to comfort him. Then she pulled him to his feet, and they started to dance, then they kissed and Drew gave her a big hug. For the first take it was a pretty passionate kiss but for the second one it was more of a quick friendly kiss.

The final short scene at the end was Scottie McRainclowd's five day forecast. Craig Ferguson was dressed in full Scottish wear with the kilt and everything. He kept screwing up his lines the first few takes, so we got to hear more cock jokes. I don't remember all the forecasts except for Tuesday, expect fog as thick as haggis, rain Wed and Thurs and Friday partly cloudy and the rapture.
