Subject: Totally Improv with Drew Carey

Greg wasn't there. Jeff wasn't there. Ryan wasn't there. Nor were Brad, Colin, Kathy, or Kaitlin. But here are a few brief notes on the Thursday night show held at the Hollywood Improv (17 June 2004):

The show was M.C.'d by David Gee (think of the "Geico" voice) and he introduced a number of comedians, many of whom now have the "contestant of 'Last Comic Standing'" label with their name. The best was probably this short, very muscular Italian gay guy who goes by the name Ant. There was a guy who won at the Aspen Comedy Festival who wasn't all that funny, and there was some other guy who came to the stage and said, "I didn't expect to do stand-up tonight, I was just home getting stoned..." (yea, no kidding), who was pretty damned good despite his condition. Better than Mr. Aspen, anyway.

Then the Improv Allstars took the stage as a cast of five, with Drew doing a little bit of stand-up beforehand. He's gotten his hair bleached again and it's reminiscent of Jeff Davis's wonky haircut; he said that one of his friends told him that he looked like he'd just blown Ryan Seacrest, LOL.

Oh, and a very disturbing thing happened just as he started talking. Some woman in her forties, dressed in white ankle socks and open-backed high-heeled shoes, hesitantly approached the stage with her hands up in a passive gesture, then went up to whisper in Drew's ear; the only word that I caught was "bathroom." She got off the stage and sat down after a few moments, and Drew played it off as a joke, but you could tell that it made him very uncomfortable and that his humorous "help me" and "what was that?" remarks weren't all bluff. I mean, jeez, how weird can you get?!? Drew went on and did some jokes about Brad Pitt and how unfair it was that the man was good-looking AND well-endowed, and he was telling another joke when his attention lapsed and he stood there mumbling it over to himself a few times before getting back on-track.

Drew called up Sean Masterson to the stage first, followed by Jonathan Mangum, Julie Larson and Chip Esten. The small cast started out with "Freeze Tag," then did "New Choice" with Jonathan calling and Chip and Sean playing. Sean seemed flustered during that game and wasn't coming up with things as fast as he usually does. When they played "Sentences," Chip and Sean, and I think Jonathan, too, had to go into the crowd and all but bully people into giving them sentences to use. A lot of the sentences involved the audience doing call-backs to the stand-ups' jokes about itchy asses and other intimate body parts. "Jeopardy" came into the act next, which didn't go very smoothly (although Chip was the best of the bunch by far, and he won the game).

They closed the show with a herald that had Chip as a second-in-command onboard a ship. Julie didn't do much that evening overall, and for this game she put herself out the woman at the front of the ship that everyone wanted to "polish"; towards the end, Chip got tied up against her. Drew was a one-legged actor in a drama (his "leg" gets amputated during the scene by Julie's large, loose vagina running around the area), and it ended with Chip breaking out into song. At first Chip looked uncertain about singing, but once Drew, Sean and Jonathan started clapping a beat and the audience joined in, he went into singing mode and did a short verse.
