There was an early SA contingent in Cleveland in the 1880's, and that seems the most likely place for him to be. The 1900 census of Cleveland shows a Salvation Army mission with a list of men and women, but no children. Presumably the children were housed elsewhere, but I wasn't able to find them in the 1900 census. Further research found a book listed on Amazon.com detailing farms in Ohio which were sponsored by the SA around the turn of the century, intended to train urban workers, displaced by the tide of mechanization, to become farmers. I'd like to find out where these farms were, as William would have been of an age to learn a trade. He met and married Harriett Wheelock in 1906 in Ashtabula Co., OH; they had two children, and he died in 1931.
