Subject: They Ask Too Much

They Ask Too Much

Today they said I must learn
to turn my heart away from loving you -
they ask too much.

I hold you close in my heart
the way a mother holds
her newborn son;
I cannot help but cling to thoughts of you
as that mother clings to the memory
of her precious son, now grown,
and a casualty of war.

I cherish you more than any dream
I ever knew,
Covet you more than any prize
I ever sought to win.

I've tried to chase you from my heart
the way a puppy
chases after the waves;
ANd like the waves, you keep returning,
again and again,
Until at last I lay down exhausted
and let you wash over me,
claiming my heart again for your own.

There is no hope apart from you,
no life I ever want to live.

I am surrounded by those
who will not understand
how necessary you are to me...

They ask too much,
I cannot let you go.
