Subject: Between Heaven and Earth (an American story)

In America today, barely an interest in it's history,
by the people of the 21st Century.
Will we repeat it, if we ignore it?
Follow me and let's explore it.

Between Heaven and Earth (an American story)

John Brown a martyr, the voice in the wilderness,
executed by fear, nothing more, nothing less.
John Brown did forecast the Civil war in his deeds.
Who knows? A conspiracy for other people's greeds.
Starting it on the day of his violent action,
did he do it for someone else's satisfaction?

The point remains, he gained his fame by his intentions.
In Virginia, he ran into the emotions of the people's tensions.
Rose up those people against him taking up arms,
took to trapping them in the armory upon the alarms.
The debate wasn't new, they were old for years, it's true.
To be slave or not to be slaved, to save, or not to be saved.
So help us God it's gray, I do beg, your will that we do.

A Presidential alarm, fearing all harm,
Army ordered to take up arms, orders to Colonel Robert E. Lee,
To arms, to arms, I plead. Charged Jeb Stewart his trusted steed.
With Marines went storming the armory with spoken warning,
pressed forward against John Brown's scorning.
Old Brown wounded, one son dead and the other soon too,
they fought the good fight, overwhelmed by Lee's might,
and the ruckus soon was through.

They drove them through town to the potter's field they went.
Ball and chain, coffin for a chair, on his coffin Ol' Brown spent.
In the wagons trail, you heard no Negroes wail.
Through all kinds of fellows, he was led to the gallows,
after a meager speech, good ol' John Brown really could preach.

Noose placed on his neck, black hood upon his head,
John Brown was soon swinging and soon very dead.
Between heaven and earth ol' John Brown did swing,
then came the song the Abolitionist sing.

"The death of this man is plainly clear,
"No man a slave in America!" they cheer.
Down in the South they felt a bit smittened,
and decided to fight and come out hittin'.

"Let us decide what our own destiny is, alone."
"Don't force your will Yankee with stick or stone."

We have the right to do it our way,
don't force your beliefs on us today."

The seeds of succession were deeply planted,
as the 12 little states raved and ranted.
Old John Brown what did you do?
Did you see it or cause it? Answer that too.

No Negroe uprising took to the spears.
Raised in the South with fear through the years.
You hung for you deeds, for all that it cost,
Hanging between heaven and earth, your now lost.

There you are in you moldering state,
buried in hell by opening the gate.
Lied about as southern mouth's spoke in hate,
"Anyone freeing the darkies will learn your fate.

So the two sides collided on yonder field,
neither side for four years, would yield.
Now Ol' John Brown is not alone anymore,
hundreds of thousands lay with him evermore.

So the morale of this story should be plainly clear,
could history repeat itself again, to that I say, "My friend,
maybe today, or tomorrow, or even in a year."
Just as then, the problems pend, it's our end,
to hang between heaven and earth again.
