An Incident

The voyage across the Pacific to Manila had been
long and arduous. So I naturally went to a bordello
for a long needed rest.

Woke from my slumber, shooting in the street below.
Put my trousers on and walked down polished marble
Steps to have a look.

A circle of exited people around a dying man whose
Hands trembled like mine after a five days bender,
And a few mangy dogs.

Glittering purple oozed onto dirty pavement; opened
His mouth, but only pink bubbles came out and night
Seeped into his eyes.

The chatty lot left, one can't stand around all night gazing at a corpse; the dogs, however, stayed put
Waiting to slack their thirst.

I walked back up polished marble steps, took my
Trousers off, drank a beer, climbed back to bed
And did what I came here for.
