First Kiss

I remember
the first time you kissed me...
Just fifteen I was already a veteran of kisses,
but no one had ever kissed me
like that.

You had an easy confidence
and I was a little afraid...

afraid I wouldn't measure up,
that you would be
disappointed in me some way
and not want to come back for more...

that you'd drive off down the street
and out of my life forever,
and I so wanted you to stay!

I never knew what passion was like
until you kissed me.

I wanted you to touch me
everywhere at once,
to kiss me and kiss me and never stop.
I wanted to be so lost in you
that I couldn't tell where one of us left off
and the other began.

I knew from that moment
I could never tell you no.

But you were eighteen
and so much wiser than me.
You kissed me just once,
long and lingering,
with your left hand
barely touching my breast.

Then you said goodnight
and drove away.
