The wind sprang up at four o’clock and blew my soul away
Roaring in the clustered pines, it tells me not to stay,
It sings of places further North, of a tropic cay,
With rollers breaking on a reef where the dolphins play.

It sang a gusty evensong, the tired sun grew red,
It sewed the moon in silver with its cirrus thread
It made the palm tree chatter of where its seed was bred
It tempts me, how it pulls me with laughter in its tread.

I would catch this shouting wind given half a chance
And flee before it joyously and revel in the dance
Of wings that bounce the turbulence, my flying horse would prance
And pierce the rolling cumulus just like a flying lance.

Oh wind, don’t sing me such great songs to lure me far away,
I cannot leave the ones I love, right here, I have to stay.
