If you have been dancing a very short time I understand why you ask, but still your teacher should have told you that upper body movement in Irish dance is a complete No No. There are too many dancers out there doing steps that are too technical for them and this can partly explain why we are seeing movement in the body. Upper body MUST be kept still at all times with good posture, shoulders back and chin up (not in the sky though). The best dancers will look relaxed and elegant and not strained. Not easy!
