Piranhas are schooling fish you can add more but also provided the aquarium must be big. The more piranhas the bigger the aquarium. I have a red bellied piranha, only 1. It's hard to get/find piranhas at my country. I mixed it when oscars,a pacu, heart shaped parrots, catfish, tin foil and a dragon fin. And it's getting along well with all of them. They are always well fed so they do now bite or eat each other off. It's a community tank. The combinations are funny and it works well. They key is space, and all must be well fed. There should be no problems.

I recently had 2 redbelly piranhas in a 30 gallon tank. one of my piranhas was killed by the other yesterday. Would it be cruel to switch him to my 15 gallon tank by himself as to save myself from having to buy a bigger tank for my multipling guppies and fry. he is 4 inches in size and about 5 months old. Will he outgrow the 15 gallon tank or will it stunt his growth?

that would not work you would wake up the next day and he probably would be dead a 55 gallon tank is suitible but get him some more piranha friends because they like to live in packs of 5 or more treat them good and they live a long time good luck

Great site ~
I have six ( 5 inch )caribe piranah in a 5'x 2'x 2' ( 120gal ) tank ~ Filtered by 2 Aquaclear 110
500 gph ( double sponged ) filters ~ The tank has good filtration and is always clear.

Down one end of the tank is a power head hooked up to an airline to give them a steady stream of bubbles and with the downforce of the 2 filters gives the tank a nice current ~ much to the dismay of the feederfish that get blown around all over the place.

Every second day they get a dozen feeder fish
with shrimp in between feeding days
Food they like :
shrimp,goldfish,minnows.crawlfish,leftover thanks giving turkey.

Funny thing is that the only food that they will eat when i have my head right up to the glass is the shrimp - they dont care who's looking and they dart up to the surface and hit the shrimp real hard from below and splash water everywhere they have even knocked one of my heaters off the suction cups and they also hit the glass with such force that i am thankful the tank has such thick glass.

The 120 gallon tank is a bit too small so for christmas
(if the budget allows ) im going to get them a 180 gal tank
which unfortunitly is the biggest tank i can fit down into the basement

Well good luck and good health to you all ~

I have a 29 gallon tank glass aqaurium with 2 young black diamond piranahs (sp?) 3 generic plastic plants and 2 rock style decorations, a power filter rated for my tank size, cartridge style, a power head rated for a 20 gallon tank for slow water circulation and movement and large polished rocks at the bottom, florescent light and a 150 watt heater. I keepo the tank , or try to at about 78-82 degrees F.

Here are my questions-
1) Is it possible to have live plants instead of plastic?
I have been told the fish will eat them to nothingness by some and some say its fine. The folks at PetSmart dont seem to know either way.
2) The fish dont seem to want to eat anythiung but live fish. I have fed them dry floating pellets, frozen blood worms and rosie reds, they only will eat the rosie reds. Is this going to be a problem later down the road?
3)I have had a bout with algea bloom to the point i have had to break it down and redo the entire tank twice, the powerhead seems toh ave taken care of this, but now one of the fish has tail rot, or had i medicated the water and it seemed to fix it.

Any help would be apprecited, thanks

I found that my fish were reluctant to feed from the top of the tank so now I use sinking foods, catfish pellets etc which they have no problem with and will eat quite happily from the bottom of the tank. Also, I started out with live plants but because of the dimmed lighting conditions I have set up ( I use a Blue Moon tube to simulate night time) it was more of a challenge to look after the live plants so I gradually switched to all plastic, which I find better, especially if my fish have a bit of a panic attack its easier to re-plant them.>I have a 29 gallon tank glass aqaurium with 2 young

Hey, I have 3 baby red belly piranhas and I was told that live plants are actually good for them because they are omnivores. Yes they do pick at the leaves, but they're very healthy. I also feed them plankton and have tetra and guppies swimming around so that when they get old enough they can eat em up =)

I noticed that they used Red Belly Piranhas on the Fear Factor show, which they had 500 in a tank. They had someone go into the tank and have to retrieve (I think) pig's kindneys (with their mouth) from the bottom of the tank. What kind of fatal threat is this to the individual in the tank??

Not much because these piranhas a scared a freightened and probably not in the tank to long. It would be more dangerous to stick a finger in someones tank after the had the piranhas for a while.

you're missing some species from your list of serrasalmus: manuelli, irritans, eigenmanni (sp?), elongatus, and more I'm sure. Just thought I'd let you know.

Hold on, you've got a species called S. Humeralis, which I'm pretty sure is invalid. I think you're refering to S. Manuelli (Green Tiger Piranha).

Hi, Im working on a sculpture project in steel and am looking for a simple clip art or line drawing of a generic or stylized Piranha that I can use. If you know of where I should go to look I would appreciate any help I can get. Even a cartoon Piranha would likely help a lot. Thanks.

Welcome to the new board. It has been several years since I have visited this web page, let alone make updates to it. So I'm starting off by adding a functional message board. The old one is no longer in service. I hope that everyone will be able to use this forum to share information and experiences with piranhas and other types of fish.
