And look where Johnny Mac is today: he's lost every decent local broadcast gig he had, starting with "Night Talk." Today, the "neolib" (good term) sits making an ass of himself on "Off Q." His ideas of intelligent discourse are straight out of "South Park," so it's no surprise to me that he admires Madden, who was more successful than Johnny ever will be.

Johnny may be liberal, but he's a middle-aged man trying to resurrect a stalled career appealing to a Gen-X demographic, proven when he shows up doing standup with the far younger Gab Bonnesso. As if he's fooling anyone about his age. Hell, Johnny's "print" contribution to City Paper is as pathetic as his blog.

Joe Pyne I watched in its heyday. I always put it on the level of the Gong Show, and long suspected at least part of that show was staged, some legit guests like Frank Zappa mixed with outright fakes who came on playing parts of wackos to give Joe a foil, the better to blow his mouth, hurl his insults and entertain fans.

Madden was warned but didn't listen. He was booted for going beyond provocative into the realm of obnoxiousness. He had multiple chances and blew them. Johnny, too had multiple chances but people never were attracted to his childishness.

Madden had a constituency; Johnny never found one.

Oh, regardless of what Nino says, I feel Smizik wrote a fair piece.
