Just about everyday the PG runs pieces--mostly op-eds, some written by staffers, many not--by people talking about themselves and their occasionally wonderful experiences. It is sometimes difficult to read these stories without feeling a pang of jealousy. We can question the PG's wisdom in printing them, and we can also just not read them, which can be tough if you're scanning--by the time you realize that it's a self-important puff piece, you're halfway through it.

I wish every PG feature and opinion writer could do well-crafted, insightful, Joseph Mitchell-type articles about Pittsburgh and its people everyday. That's the ideal. As it is, not many writers or papers have that kind of talent. So Millman, like many other young struggling writers, is full of herself, and her editors, who need to fill space and perhaps have conceits that they are nurturing a budding star, indulge her. Things could be worse (see: Trib), so just try not to read her articles and search for the diamonds in the rough. (Sorry for ending on a cliche.)
