I went back and read both pieces, I don't think they were in competition either. At the same time, I have to agree with the original premise. Owen's blog post was quite superfluous and I've read enough of his increasingly shallow work to conclude when the chips are down, he's simply incapable of producing the kind of substantive material Carpenter and other veteran reporters can do almost in their sleep.

I honestly have to wonder what the paper's management was thinking when they hired Owen.
