I agree with Middled Out...the intense competition between the P-G and the Trib has filtered onto this board...it can get ugly and personal.
But I disagree about that neither is very good. I really think each one has their own strengths and weaknesses.
For the Trib, I genuinely believe they kick butt on the first-day, breaking news stories...see the Pittsburgh police shootings, etc. (though I don't think they were at their best for the LA Fitness shootings)
The P-G does a better job, most of the time, on the "think" stories a day or two later, the ones that put an event in context (such as Dennis Roddey's stories about Poplawski and the Web presence after the shootings...great research and great stories). And they're not "catch up" stories either. They offer true meat to an ongoing story.
Both papers have issues with their leaders..Scaife is..well, Scaife. Shribman (hope I spelled that right) is too high-brow for this area, and obviously thinks himself better than the market he's supposed to be serving.
Has the quality slipped at both? For sure.
But name me one paper that hasn't...staff cuts have decimated just about every paper across the country. And it shows.
Middled, I wish you luck in your search..it's a tough market no matter where you go. I think Pittsburgh will be a one-paper town in five years. Which one? Don't know. But either one would be a loss for the region.
