Good points, Agree.

I'd add just a couple things.

The Trib's good staffers are hurt by the stories, real and exaggerated, about Scaife's interference in the news end of things, or editors' craven fear of upsetting him and therefore skewing news stories to avoid his wrath. These good folks don't even try to defend that side of the paper, but what can they do? It undermines the cred of their great work and that's a shame.

PG, too, has some stellar talent. The Blocks' shallow obsession with "status" is what brought Shribman on board. He was, and is, totally unqualified to be an Executive Editor, being nothing more than a glorified, insular DC pundit. John Robinson Block is no hail-fellow well met type either. He's an Ivy League elitist, same as Shribman. They're a good match, but the PG suffers for it.

Both papers have gotten sloppier as time passes.

With that out of the way, let me express my view the PG arts coverage outguns the Trib many times over. Some of what you see in the Trib reminds me of a bad imitation of City Paper, where some of their current arts staff once held sway.
