There is a difference between being a critic and a term considered rather noxious in newspaper circles, and it is called BOOSTERISM, when an alleged critic or reporter sets aside opinion and journalism to become an unabashed rooter for "the home team." It's expected to a degree in sports. It is reviled among serious journalist and arts critics. It basically compromises their credibility. He would have been in the clear had he excised four words from his blog comments: VOTE FOR WENDY BELL. Beyond that what he wrote was fine.

Rob is a likable guy and can be a good critic if he wants to but too often he is showbiz-dazzled and shallow. I see a lot of ex-colleagues worked over on this forum, sometimes unjustifiably, sometimes very justifiably. But the jabs at Rob for boosting TV shows shooting here and locals in the biz out in Hollywood is a little dicey. Should that be covered? Yes, absolutely. Does he overdo it or swerve into booster mode too often? Yes, absolutely. That no one puts a stop to it is no real surprised, given the state of things.

He's a critic / columnist, and as such he offers
>opinions along with TV news reporting. Is this any
>different than a baseball columnist saying that player
>so-and-so deserves a vote for an All-Star game? No.
>You obviously don't like Rob Owen. That's fine.
>Opinions are like sphincters - we all have them. But
>to suggest a TV critic can't offer an opinion, that
>this little blurb was "over the line" -- jeez, I'm
>just not seeing it. It's a blog. Opinions are
>expressed. Views are espoused. Welcome to 2002.
