"It's part of our culture to be feel vaguely dissed -- and to then stand up and say, "Damn right!" when someone notices our great city....."

Okay, up to a couple years ago, I'd second this without thinking twice. Trouble is, the G-20 is being held here and it's not because Pittsburgh is a rusting hulk ala Detroit. The 'Burgh has been getting increasingly favorable national press (remember the "Most Livable City ratings?) sending those stereotyped "smoky steel town" stereotypes into the mists of history.

Howard Fineman, a Squirrel Hill native known for his Newsweek columns and his punditry on MSNBC, did a great column about how his hometown battled back from the economic brink WITHOUT bailouts and so on but through reinventing itself with tech, medicine, sports and specialized industrials.

I think we're just about past the point of this inferiority complex business. If was no doubt true for a good while, but not any more. As for Rob Owen, he can do it when he has to, as you mention with the WQED piece. But he could use more adult supervision. A little too full of himself and too star-fixated.
