Say what you will about Ron Musselman, but his Penn State football coverage was lousy. Let's face it, the P-G sports section ranges from weak to awful. Ed Bouchette got whipped on Tomlin's hiring by SI.com. Bouchette got stomped on the Steelers' possible sale by the Wall Street Journal. Bouchette makes a dozen factual errors each week but never corrects any of them. He is gutless. All the talking heads in broadcast suck up to Bouchette, never bothering to examine his countless failings. Bouchette is a bad -- yes, that's right -- a bad beat writer. But compared to Chuck Finder, Bouchette still looks like a newsman. Finder erroneously reported that Rich Rodriguez had taken the Alabama job. Finder makes the kind of braindead errors one expects from the Trib, not the P-G. As for the P-G sports columnists, they reek. Gene Collier's stuff is dense. He doesn't write with readers in mind. Ron Cook's stuff is at kindergarten level. Slothful Shelly Anderson ought to be working in Hooterville. The P-G brass sent her to China to cover the Summer Olympics, but she did not bother to stick with Lauryn Williams, the only Pittsburgh-area athlete with a shot at gold. Anderson was not even at the stadium when Williams dropped the baton in the 4x100 relay heats. P-G city-side reporters had to bail out Anderson, who missed a story that was right in front of her. Yup, Jerry Micco and David Shribman are producing a wretched sports section. Wretched.
