Subject: It may be oil that was in the exhaust before the new engine was cranked. Sometimes the oil on the valve guides of a new engine will cause smoke but should clear up after a few minutes of warming up. The choke will cause black smoke if partially closed. Oil will cause white/gray smoke. An intake manifold that is not torqued properly will cause oil to wick out the exhaust too. And yes, the choke must have a (+) wire to work properly on electric chokes.
