What's in a Domain? ~ Atlantic City Style
I recently found a pretty nifty tool for checking-up on domains. The home page for the "power search" is
www.deleteddomains.com. and I had a lot of fun with it.

Below you will see a recently generated list from deleted domains.com of "Domains that
have been registered in the past 60 days". Note that some of the following domains will not take you anywhere yet,but some
will. Some of the URLS have been registered by DOMAIN COLLECTORS, also called CYBER-SQUATTERS,and/or if they
are really up to no-good-CYBER-PIRATES!.....some are or will be actual new websites.

Next,you will see a list of recently deleted, or placed "on hold" domains. The deleted are up-for-grabs.
They have been registered before, but have gone through the entire cycle of being dropped due to non-payment of domain dues.
The "on hold" have a grace period or redemption period remining before they become available-although the names will not take
you to a website at this point and no in-coming e-mail can be recieved at that DOT COM-( that could send-up a red flag to any
webmaster with an active site who accidently forgot to pay the fee.)- the original owner still has the option to pay the fee.
and re-claim the domain. Some expired domains, have been used before-such as atlanticcityadmirals.com,
atlanticcitycheesecake.com,...(from the
DROPPED in the past 60 days list). URLS that have been used before, are valuable in that they may already have internet "traffic", or, other sites
may mention or link to that web addy,and/or web-surfers may have saved the URLS in "favorite folders" or book-marked them.
How would you like to have all of the traffic to the web addy www.atlanticcityrocks.com? or www.atlanticcityrolls.com?-(both previosly registered active domains which are as of this time available).
Porno web sites love to take expired domains and put porno where ther once was a "real" website. That's why you'll
sometimes find a porno site when you try to visit some other site.
Also TOP-LEVEL domains,the DOT COMS,DOT NETS and ORGS,the shorter word w/o hyphens,numbers, or misspelled, are considered to be the Boardwalk & Park Place of the www.

If you would like to do a "whois" search on any of the domains mentioned above, or if you are interested in having a service

SNAP BACK NAMES is primarily a "back-order" domain service, but purchasing domains is also available through the site.
There are some great domain name purchase companies, I used APLUS for the two names that I own, one was about $9.00 & one was $16.00.APLUS has great 24 hour customer service online, or over the phone. They haven't let me down yet!
SNAP-NAMES also has some information on something called WLS-"wait-listing-service", an anticipated but will possibly get shot-down in court new way of owning the right to buy an expired domain. An example of that is www.talkradio.net.
Snap-Names already has a customer who has paid for the service of an "attempted" grab,should the name become available,even though www.talkradio.net does not have to pay it's dues 'till 2004.-it's not avilable.
People who really want certain domains even get "beeper service"-should a desired name become un-expectedly available.
Although SNAP-NAMES will at this time-make a really good try at grabbing the name- unless WLS is enforced, they are in
competition with anyone else. The WLS will "LOCK-DOWN" the wait process. meaning that whoever is officially next in line
if the domain is released-well they "own" option and nobody else could swoop-in and grab it.
The downside that some are protesting is that this creates an opportunity for cyber-sqatters to hog-up domain names that
they are only interested in for greedy purposes. The WLS was approved to go in effect in October but was postponed. Those
who are looking forward to it,are now saying that it could become the law of the land in domain waiting ANY MINUTE now, and
they are also predicting a big '"Land rush""-(Snapback), on launch day.
A good WHOIS search engine will let you see quite a bit of information about any domain name including, when the name was
registered,by who, phone #,address,when the fee must be paid.
SNAP like most whois engines has a tricky "eye-test" like gimmick,where you are forced to key-in a code to see the
information. The cool thing about SNAP BACK NAMES is that they have an additional search engine on the site to enter more
than one name at a time if you have a few that you are interested in, but you will only have to enter the code one time.
If the domain that you want to know about has been registered through certain services, like TUCOWS, and the information does
not appear on the SNAP results, you can go directly to whoever the listed registrar company (TUCOWS,etc.),and try again.
Finally, here's a link to the arbitrator of all disputes arising from domain names. ICANN is the governing body of of domain
naming. The link is a list of decided cases including the much refrenced TELSTRA CORPORATION LIMITED V NUCLEAR
MARSHMALLOWS ,
that case, pretty much set and tested the ground rules of domain ownership. Is a domain "Identical or confusingly similar" to a trademarked product? Is the domain being used in "bad-faith"- or not being used at all?. NUCLEAR MARSHMALLOWS lost that one on most if not all points. TELSTRA is THE phone company in Australia-(or is it Aukland?)and they really didn't like the fact that their customers were visiting NUCLEAR... @ www.telstra.net
